@clacke Wisdom from volume 11 of Dtack Grounded (http://www.easy68k.com/paulrsm/dg/dg11.htm):

    > Anybody who programs in FORTH is by definition intelligent, alert and self-confident. They may also have slightly twisted minds - after all, they do everything backwards - but they are NOT dull. Very few FORTH programmers watch Gilligan's Island reruns.

@shimon Yes, I do! Probably not for a little while, though, I'm still quite caught up in a Z80 project. But I came across these chips very cheaply and felt like I couldn't possibly *not* buy them.

I like SomaFM's Groove Salad *a lot*, but sometimes I feel like I have been listening to exactly the same relatively small set of songs for several years, and it's getting stale. :/

@saper @vfrmedia Regarding trading performance overhead for ease of programming, what I'm proposing could perhaps be thought of in loosely the same light as Woz's "SWEET 16" language for the 6502:

@vfrmedia @saper Yes, addressing using IX and IY is unfortunately very slow.

@saper @vfrmedia Oh, sure, this will definitely produce larger and slower code than carefully choosing the right registers so that you can do everything within the limitations of the instruction set.

In some cases, the overhead might be worth the increased ease of programming.

And, yes, you're right, I chose a sub-optimal substitution here. But for any illegal combo of registers, there is an optimal workaround, and the tool I envisaged would always insert the optimal code.

@saper @vfrmedia Well, suppose you wanted to do a "LD B, (DE)", which is not actually permitted (you can only load into registers other than A from HL). You could work around this by doing a "PUSH AF / LD A, (DE) / LD B, A / POP AF". In general, by backing up some registers on the stack first (probably mostly A and HL) and shuffling things around at the end, you can usually simulate being allowed to do any instruction with any combination of registers you like.

@bobjonkman Based on my experience, it wouldn't surprise me at all of that were the case. As long as direct communication between the five largest free email providers works smoothly, probably 99.99% of people are satisfied. Combine this with the silly but prevalent idea that "email is dead" and I can see "edge cases" like yours not being a big concern.

@kat Nope, not me. Glad to know I'm not alone, though! That grey listing milter sounds a lot more capable than what I'm using now. Perhaps I'll try switching to it.

In happier news, Amazon.de's proprietary "über langsam, über circuitous" delivery system has finally, after about 3 weeks, conveyed my new multimeter meter to me (via the UK, because why not). So now I can measure things around my house while I recuperate.

Obviously my frail, sisu-free antipodean constitution is totally unequipped to handle a brutal Finnish early autumn (supposedly it's going to snow, a little, on Thursday!), because I've gone and caught a cold. :(

@craigmaloney What baffled me was that when I got on this small time blacklist nobody had heard of, I couldn't send email to hotmail users (who apparently are still plentiful in NZ), even though I was definitely *not* blacklisted at any of the major lists. Apparently nobody at Microsoft thought to implement some kind of reputation-weighted majority rules logic.

Thanks for the Zen Spamhaus recommendation. I've heard it before (possibly even from you!) and will try to check it out soon.

@craigmaloney I first implemented it after reading the (now fairly old) stuff at acme.com (http://www.acme.com/mail_filtering/). It worked for me quite well at first, but these days I think it's perhaps more of a pain than a benefit.

I'm reluctant to rely on blacklists, though. I've had deliverability problems of my own in the past because some half-rate blacklist operator listed (I presume) the entire IP range my VPS provider uses, so Jef's warnings about DNS-RBLs rings true to me.

@kat Yeah, I think the time may have come to switch it off. Sadly, on the modern net it sometimes fails spectacularly, e.g. when every subsequent retry comes from a different cloud mail server with a new IP address! I've also noticed a (very) few servers which don't even *try* to resend anymore.

Ugh! Getting pretty tired of greylisting seriously ruining my online life. Usually it's just account activation emails taking an hour to come in so I can't use things I've just signed up for for ages, but Amazon just sent me a verification code that expired 10 minutes after it was sent, and it took 10 minutes to go through *facepalm*
