So clearly I was wrong to think that Chinese Americans are necessarily different from “normal” Americans in this respect.

Actually, sex selection procedures seem to be illegal in China, so I could imagine there’s a certain amount of China-to-USA medical tourism for this among couples who don’t want to just take their chances and abort female fetuses.
