How many #InfoSec #SysAdmin #DevOps and other techie people have dedicated servers running and not being used most of the time to their full potential? I know I do.
Surely there is a way to have them connect and create a libre cloud - think of it as SETI@Home or Folding@Home, but for running services (say, docker containers or VMs).
That could create infrastructure for people who cannot afford their own servers, but would like to play with stuff.

@phooky That's kind of how online tech started the first time around too, though: A small number of people identifying a problem to solve, and a lot of bandwagon riders proving that they, too, are on the new hot thing.

Any idea how this works behind the scenes? There are circumstances where I wish this worked via the API (since non-federated messages don't have a local post ID and thus can't be boosted).

Sometimes I just want a message to exist on different instances, I don't want to boost it up again, and/or push it into my timeline.
There's a trick for that. If you copy paste the direct link to a post into your search-box, that instance imports it and it exists there on the federated timeline and will appear in searches.
You can find the direct link by right-clicking the post-date of a post and selecting 'copy link location'.

Progress report:
This is now stable enough to be my go-to gopher client. Among other things, nav and scrolling works like a charm, and I download (rather than displaying) binary files.
Planned features:
* Use multithreading to background downloading of binary files. Display currently-downloading files in status bar, and prompt on exit if that's more than 0.
* Keep track of the last-selected link & scroll position on pages in your history, so you can hit back & jump to where you were.

Guy Fawkes literally thought bombing parliament would make it more likely for England to be governed by the Pope. But, I would make the argument that there was a lot of religious terrorism going on in Europe in general during that period, regardless of brand loyalty.
Both sides wanted hereditary absolutist monarchy; both wanted a religious basis; it's just a matter of whether or not they wanted a return of the old catholic lineage monarchs.
