just think, there are probably dozens if not hundreds of parts of your computer that do nothing but transmit "UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU..." in ASCII to various other places, forever. i wonder how many U's theyve sent! quite a few

@jk I like to think that, for every sort of limp and faded memory you can dredge up on your own volition, there are 10 more that cant be dredged up, but instead can can only be 'knocked loose' by some seemingly random external stimuli which is connected to that submerged feeling. And that sensation of such a memory being 'knocked loose' substantiates the experience 10x than any willed recollection. The lucky thing, perhaps, is that these must get more frequent as time goes on...

@jk Windows NT is weird like that. The underlying kernel is actually pretty well done (from what I hear), but Explorer is off in its own world in the same way WSL or Wine is, and it didn't evolve at the same rate as the rest so it ends up being slow or having a bunch of filename restrictions that aren't there in cmd.exe.

I think that's why they're so desperate to push the win10 store on everyone, everything else from the dawn of time calls into explorer to do stuff so they can't change it

@jk windows explorer probably also sends copies of those files to NSA for sake keeping, you know

@paul i looked at a bunch of people online saying that windows file transfers were unusually slow and tried 4-5 of the workarounds/fixes but none of them worked!

@jk it's not universal but i think there's a tendency for us to become aware of the complexities and ambiguities of life and the world around us as time goes on

and i don't know my media history to say this with certainty but i think that's also reflected in culture, in the stories we tell and respond to hearing

simplicity... it's something that can betray you, you know?

@paul it just says "over 1 day". in my case right now the test case is "copy about 850 GB from one internal SATA HDD to an external USB 2.0 HDD". the file transfers were something like 80kbps, which is ridiculous

at 480Mbps it should be around 4 hours, which is what rsync is reporting...

@katex no idea! it's probably faster. i don't really want to install win32 rsync when i can just open up the WSL console and type "apt-get install rsync", or, more likely, "rsync"

one thing ive noticed about windows 10 is that it's faster to run rsync in the Windows Subsystem For Linux than it is to just copy a large number of files using windows explorer. which is pretty fucked up

i feel like maybe i haven't generated that many new feelings since i was younger, and when i want to feel strongly about something i have to think about something from the past??? but maybe it's just that i've forgotten the subtleties of my feelings due to time passing. and my current life seems messy and inconclusive only because i'm living it. i wonder what kind of convenient and simplistic story i will tell myself about "2018 me" in the future

i think i'm extremely good at remembering exactly how i felt in a specific time or 'scene' in my memory. but now obviously i can no longer relate to the Past-Me. the conflict between seeing something and remembering how it made me feel but no longer feeling that way is painful and weird, and makes me feel simultaneously like i want to go back in time, but also that i want to forget all my memories. but i don't want to do either, both sound horrible!!!

the extremely overwhelming feeling is thinkin about all the time i spent like, in class at school 15 years ago, like doing something that i thought was extremely important, but because it was not important in the slightest there is literally no evidence of it ever even happening except in my memory. so really did it even happen

@jk @vertigo noone asked me but I guess you will have to get through similar shit but it may work better in the end. Depends on your hardware and distro a_lot (I didn't think it really matters much and I was wrong).
Source: using Linux as main OS for 8 years with some pauses. It's getting better but I broke everything few months ago again.

(Forgive me, why did I have to say that, it was useless, is it a disease or something)
