The evolution of the Cambridge Analytica scandal is amazing.
Start with: Shady company effectively uses a host of dirty tricks to destabilize democracy (Brexit, Trump)
Evolves to: Facebook, a long-unethical company rich through surveillance capitalism, hasn't enacted appropriate safeguards for your data, #deletefacebook
Sure, deleting FB has and always will be a good step. But these democracy-destabilizers are dodging bullets like Neo in the Matrix - media will just not stay focused.
I work in communications and graphic design. I studied philosophy and wrote a thesis in philosophy of science, epistemology, and questions about truth.
These days I'm interested in public discourse and advertising. I believe #journalism is a species of public relations - ask me about it sometime. I'm also interested in developing more shared, robust theories of what counts as journalism, in order to make it better. (I use he/him.)
I just read up on the recent issue between mastodon.social and social.targaryen.house, over m.s "silencing" s.t.h to handle a bad user, H5N10, when s.t.h admin didn't appear sufficiently responsive.
This might end in a long-term split between tightly-policed instances (green zone) and anything-goes instances (red zone). But who controls the policing? It risks being collective punishment.
@Shadejackrabbit Amen. I quit Zuckerbook both over privacy concerns and the fact that I always felt worse after using it. It was very efficient at making me dislike people I otherwise enjoyed.
We're glad to have you here with us, though! [insert socially-appropriate physical expression of appreciation]
@Dana Bagged milk for sure, although the second is the unexpected calmness that comes from having universal healthcare. My family is healthy and financially secure, but we were surprised by how much calmer we were knowing that a sudden medical thing wouldn't bankrupt us.
St. Louis has it's pros and cons, for sure. The Hill district is a big pro, though - best Italian food I've ever had, including Italy. What's your favorite part about the area?
@ink_slinger@thurloat Or maybe the solution is an organizational one - have the instance run by a non-profit, managed by a board of instance participants? Have some bylaws controlling instance dissolution?
@Shadejackrabbit Another element to consider - for-profit social media adjusts what they show other users based on a number of factors, so your friends may literally not seeing all of your posts. Mastodon just does chronological posting, so everyone sees every post if they go back far enough.
- transparency - enable others and upskill them - group training.. it scales! - test when you can via blog posts, lightning talks, developing elevator pitch - embrace your vulnerability.. often nobody else will even notice this except you - get feedback.. active listening - follow up on promises - consistently amplify the work that others do - encourage the network to openly reach out
@ink_slinger@thurloat No bullshit, I actually saw a promoted post on birdsite that was social media on the blockchain. It's a thing, @thurloat. Don't hate on the future! π
@ink_slinger Almost feels like we need another layer of distributed: mirrors of each instance so that it can be supported by a true collective rather than the whims of Derek.
Finally, a hot but correct take - Disney's hand-drawn animation is just not good, you guys. I realize they barely had computers, but it's honestly hard to watch nowadays, it's so jumpy.
-At the end, an evil sea witch grows several orders of magnitude and starts a giant sea vortex, and Prince Eric is just like, "cool, I'm just gonna steer my ship here, totally normal" -The coat of arms for Eric's kingdom? An E. A fucking E. -Ariel hanging on the side of a ship while still a mermaid. She's used to floating, folks. Suddenly, she weighs several times what she used to, and she's just casually hanging on the side of a wet rocking ship
-Super-dated trope that men prefer silent, pretty girls -Honestly, a lot of lazy stereotyping in general (French chef saying "sacre bleu!", bad Cajun accent on Sebastian, "she's got it bad!", and on and on) -Regular casual violence, you know, just for laughs -They make a big point about humans eating fish, but dafuq merpeople eat? Kelp? Most fish eat other sea creatures, folks -The point where fish meets person on the merpeople gets a little, um, pubic
