Bavaria passed a new law that allows police to carry hand grenades

what the fuck are they supposed to do with those

how did anyone argue for that

(they're also allowed to store, delete and change digital data, have more rights regarding telco and post surveillance, can detain people for three months preventatively… this is making me sick)

(I understand that there is a need for law enforcement to have some means of doing their work.
But these things should still require a court's approval, especially when we're talking about request from foreign countries with other privacy laws and other political - sometimes non-democratic - systems)

@ink_slinger @allan Personal branding - This hits the nail on the head for me. The web used to be a very open *personal* space. You said something because you needed to say it, and that it.

With the growth of likes/clicks/retweets - the gamification of contact - it's become far less authentic. And the need to keep it appropriately filtered and cultivated makes it just another place we need to put on a face for whoever is looking.

@starbreaker Absolutely agree. It's astounding that with all of the advancement in tech and browsers, webpages have continued to get bigger, not smaller. I think the growth in interactivity has been a net positive over time, though, and that's easy to overlook.

I don't understand what spurred the recent zeitgeist of old web sentimentality.

"Remember when our souls weren't harvested for cash, you viewed porn one picture at a time, and everyone used the blink tag?"

Hey you know when after the San Bernardino shooting we all figured the FBI and DOJ were cynically following the maxim "never let a crisis go to waste"? Yup that was 100% true. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20180327/15444939518/fbi-officials-were-angry-that-iphone-hack-blocked-them-getting-court-to-force-apple-to-break-encryption.shtml

FBI Officials Were Angry That An iPhone Hack Blocked Them From Getting Court To Force Apple To Break Encryption
      from Techdirt.
As you probably recall, last year the FBI tried to force a court to effectively create a backdoor for encrypted iPhones, using the high profile San Bernardino shootings as the wedge. It seemed quite obvious with how the whole thing played out that the...

@starbreaker That's a good answer. This particular role was for some Windows-native UI design, so they wanted someone very familiar with Windows styling conventions - I tried to play it up a bit.

A recent interviewer asked about my experience with Windows. I use Windows for work and Linux at home.

And I caught myself a millimeter away from saying "Windows in the streets, Linux in the sheets."

I didn't. But they all knew that's what I meant.
