Yes, I'd enjoy a video about that. So many things to think about!

I guess that's not surprising, path of least resistance and all. Sure wish I knew the answer... -

Yup, totally. Practicality is good, I'm not opposed to folks making money from their youtube channels. I like the parallel platform idea. Post it where the people are, but make other options available, and allow for income to flow in other ways than just google things. It's probably the savvy thing anyway, not to have all our eggs in one basket, since the internet is always changing and who knows where it'll go. -

Associated question / comment: How unethical is it to make money from youtube videos, when it is profiting off of Google and their abusive shenanigans? I have a little youtube channel for my painting, and had planned to monetize it eventually, but now I've had that thought I don't think I can...
I might have to put a disclaimer that google is crappy and to patreon me a buck or two if people want to support. Not like I was going to get rich off silk painting videos, but it's the principle.

Yeah, I know that does get sticky. Hopefully the more Mastodon and the like catch on, they can partner with more open / P2P video platforms and gain a following that way. I don't know, but it's high time for a youtube dethroning. -

How each person uses their internet connection is different, but the shared feature is text
It shouldn’t be hard to mass produce tiny wireless mesh boxes which allow anyone to transmit and receive text messages with very little power
If there’s a node in every home, conceivably, someone could send a message cross-country (albeit slowly). If anything, during a natural disaster or any emergency, they could ask for help or let loved ones know they’re alive when all other infrastructure is down

Do you have favorite web sites for Linux and nerdy tech news and articles? I feel a shortage of nerdy reading...

That's interesting. I do think Arch is pretty cool, but appreciate a graphical installer, although I know it's not the "arch way". That's why I have liked Manjaro too. I'll look into Void - it's interesting that it's an independent distro. -

Thanks for the recommendations. It's a bummer that work and life are so busy right now. I'd love a day or two to sit around and drink coffee and experiment with all these fun ideas. I have had fun times with Manjaro, and I like the Arch world, so Antergos is the next one I want to play with. -

Cool. It's worth investigating. I've been curious about it, and I do like the AUR. -

That's a thought. How do you feel about Antergos compared to Manjaro? I like Manjaro, but sometimes had grub conflict weirdness that makes me hesitant to rely on it. -

I've been using Ubuntu Mate as my main distro for a couple years. I have dabbled in OpenSuse Tumbleweed, Manjaro, Solus and a few others. I feel like I should mix it up a little bit and try something new as a daily driver. I like lightweight systems that are fast on my mediocre laptop, tend to enjoy rolling releases, and the Grub needs to not freak out because I have multiple OSes on various partitions. Any recommended distros I should check out?

Ah, tragedy! Some used computer shops have decent prices on older ipods and the like. That's my plan if my ipod goes down. -

Just to mix it up, since I've used Thunderbird for the last 15 years(?), I have been trying some alternate email clients, but I keep coming back to Thunderbird. Maybe I just need to get a handle on using a command line client, to be a more excellent and righteous nerd.

I'm having a moment of appreciation for single use devices. I have an old school ipod that just plays music, and it is fantastic. It holds a ton of music and audiobooks, and doesn't update itself or connect to the internet, or do anything weird. It's grand. I hope someone somewhere is still making mp3 players like this, but I don't really know.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either. But what is great is when stuff like this comes to light, so the citizens of these countries can actually know what's going on, discuss it and let our lawmakers know what we think. Interesting times we're living in... -

I have MXLinux on my desktop and it's real nice. I do love a quick, zippy OS, and am rather a fan of Debian. Perhaps I'll try again to get it going on my laptop where I do most of my work.
