@hund Quite right you are! I love the AUR, definitely good for my cravings for juicy new software. I've gone back and forth between Manjaro and an Ubuntu derivative for a while - When I want to play it's Manjaro. When I tell myself to stop twiddling and do actual work it's Ubuntu. Isn't that how everyone does it? :)
@hund Only because sometimes software I want to try is only available in one format or another, and I'm impatient, so I wind up going with what they have.
@ChrisWere That would be nice. They all work fine from my experience, but juggling a bunch of different systems is confusing as a user who wants to know where the files are, and it sounds like the worst thing ever from a distro management perspective. I can only imagine. 😬
@hergertme That's really good. I mostly get into trouble when I want to install an app or a version that isn't in the software center. Not really a big deal though and I'm sure the whole app management thing will only get smoother with time.
My biggest problem with snap, appimage, flatpak, etc. is I can't remember which way I installed it. Then when regular ole 'sudo apt remove' doesn't work I have to go on a whole fact-finding mission to see how it got there.
@aidan_walsh I guess that's reasonable, just seems like they took their sweet time, since they discovered it a while ago last year... But if it's being publicized, people are more likely to try to exploit it, so a mixed bag I guess. Still, I'll be watching real hard for patches.
I'm looking to get a cheap tablet with a semi-decent camera that I can de-google and use for email, podcasts, music and some photos and instagram for work. All the things that we use phones for, that have nothing to do with actual telephones. I'll use my phone only for phoning, and just use the tablet with wifi. I'd think about a GDP Pocket running Linux, but I can't spend that much. Any recommendations, dear nerd friends? There are so many tablets on the market I don't know where to start.
@Maltimore I have a protonmail account, but for everyday usage I'm using Posteo, and it works quite well. It has a good privacy standards and has a calendar and address book too.
@BryanLunduke My two cents: I appreciate the problem solving side of the issue - like presenting some alternatives to software that's being uncool rather than just yelling at them, or bottling up your fury. Alternatives are the first thing I look for when I hear something I don't like about software I use. Promoting the competition can be its own little revenge while keeping it nice and positive.
League Of Legends is now Flatpak'd to play on Linux!
Can get really tiring telling new comers / common users to make sure they have all dependencies etc. installed for Wine.. and then it may still not work on their particular system for other reasons.
Flatpak and Snaps are going to solve the whole "configuring Wine" drama on Linux once and for all.
@BryanLunduke Why aren't there more options for e-ink screens as a low power, low eye strain option? They are great for reading, writing and terminal-ing. One of my unrealized dreams, having a tiny portable eink laptoppy thing.
I had a creepy distopian dream that all people were being mind-controlled by their phones. Is this just a reflection of reality or does it mean I need to throw away regular life and go live in a yurt in the forest?
@BryanLunduke I wonder about an app rather than a site for video searching, something that pulls from multiple sites and uses ads or whatever to monetize and pay creators. Kind of like a cross between an RSS app and a search engine to not rely on only one site. Kind of like old style Napster, but legal.
Also yes to torrent style video. Peertube looks real nifty.
@Linux Nice. I do love Solus. It probably would have been my main distro if not for the lack of my established finance program. I'll revisit it when that gets added some day...
