@h @ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @jjg @GuerillaOntologist @chendricks I dunno. What I'm doing sounds tangential to what they're doing. Also, I have my own opinions about licensing that don't sound like they would line up with theirs.

@ntnsndr @Matt_Noyes @h @jjg @GuerillaOntologist OK, here's my latest on idea on publishing for the commons, and publishing the Arizmendi book in particular. Since I plan to put it under the PPL, and I'm already giving away what I have so far, it makes sense to post the files publicly. Instead of trying to sell them, I'll ask folks to donate via Liberapay.
This isn't that big of a change. Mostly, I'm dropping the idea of running an online bookstore, and focusing on a quasi-subscription model.

@h @jjg jjg does not show up in my timeline, even though I'm following him. I can't figure out why. (Yes, I know you were talking about email, but it seemed like a good time to mention it.)

@h @jjg I'll look into this, since, well, I've already started. For years, I've dreamed of spinning off a publishing co-op from my interpreting/translating co-op, and if several people want to join me, that could be enough to make it a reality.

@h @jjg If there was a gitit instance running somewhere, could you code something to interact with the git back end, independent of the wiki portion? If so, it's no longer an either/or question.
I suppose all we really need is a gitlab instance running on social.coop to get started. People could choose their own interface.

@jjg @h I may have mentioned this long ago, but the best option I've seen is gitit, which is git on the back end, and a wiki on the front end.

@h @jjg It's amusing that you mention Leanpub, because I also had a frustrating experience there, and my local workflow largely replicates the better aspects I found there.

@h @jjg I think a number of us want/need a git-ish repository for prose. Maybe we should, you know, cooperate.

@jjg @h If you want, I'll send you my script that inputs md files and output PDF files. It's really just a wrapper for pandoc, so I don't have to keep retyping all the variables. 😀

@Antanicus @LeoSammallahti I want to see a screenshot of this, but I don't know if that's even possible.

@eliotberriot @rbenjamin @Stoori I like this idea, though I can't contribute anything at a technical level. I can see, however, that it would have to be very flexible. It would have to include all manner of media, genres, languages, currencies, and so on. It would almost amount to a trade network.

@eliotberriot @rbenjamin @Stoori This pretty much sounds like Liberapay, or public radio here in the US, in that the content is distributed for free and people pay whatever feels right. The new aspect appears to be that consumers are funding specific goals. So, basically, it's many-to-many crowdfunding. Right?

@rbenjamin @eliotberriot @Stoori Translated books.
I have a half-formed idea about how the network you describe could define itself and support itself (in part) through open licenses that expressly allow for commercial reuse of content, above and beyond being free (gratis).

@eliotberriot @rbenjamin @Stoori I'm about to set up a web store where the customers name their own price (including free). How is your idea different from this?

@craigmaloney Funny you should mention publishing platforms.... I'm about to create one. Granted, it's really just Woocommerce, but at least I'll own it.
