@sn0w If you don't understand that perspective it's quite alright. You have an amazing opportunity to listen to folks on this network. Peek into conversations and see what they're talking about, what their concerns are, and where things can improve.

They give you an opportunity that you don't get in other places.

Belying that trust means those conversations go away and the only conversations you'll hear ar those where folks don't feel threatened just by being in public.

And I'm not angry at all; I'm trying to help you understand a perspective that you're not quite catching.

This isn't about controlling a network, it's about framing what a community membmer can expect on a federated network.

It's similar to walking down the street and not having someone punch me in the face unprovoked. There's a certain community standard at play.

I'd rather have a network where folks don't have to fear.

@sn0w @kara @mwlucas Right, but I can expect a certain amount of decorum. If I put something on my porch I can have a reasonable expectation that it will still be there when I return. That's community decency.

True, there's going to be bad actors. I get that. But it's up to us as a community to see what we will tolerate. If we set the bar at "public posts are fair game" then we lose a bit of ourselves.

Or would it be better to say "these sorts of projects are unacceptable in this community and we ask you kindly to stop making them because you're actively harming folks?"

It's no different than the community standards we have in our own public spaces.

@mwlucas @sn0w Put a different way: I want to choose when I have a microphone and when I have a megaphone.

Microphones broadcast to smaller audiences, usually in areas where folks are gathered to listen to the speaker.

Megaphones are about broadcasting to larger audiences outside of those who wish to listen to the speaker.

If we put a megaphone on everyone we amplify conversations that were never intended to be amplified.

Would you want a megaphone in every space you exist?
