the free software movement explicitly claims an ethical basis for the work. Individuals in the movement, being human as they are, can often get things very wrong, but at least the door is open to call us on it.

open source, and it's au courant post-open source successors, deliberately walks away from *explicit* ethical claims in favor of a squishier utilitarian or pragmatic, but implicit, ethic, an ethic of earnings and efficiency and expediency.

I want to burn to ash the whole notion of things-we-forgot-we-learned as being "intuitive"

it's training or habit, not intuition.

If you find yourself sitting in cars now and then, this might be interesting to you and help you prevent accidents.
So if you open a cars door from the inside, you open the door with the hand that's not next to the door. This means that you turn around you body which automatically turns your vision in the direction where other cars or bikes might come from.

I was taught this early on I believe, anyways this is the way I have always done it.

Just think about how many conversations you've had with developers where they've compared editors or operating systems solely on the basis of features, with ethics and freedom not entering into their consideration AT ALL.

This is ESR's legacy in many ways, by the way, because "Open Source" is what you get when you take the ethics out of Free Software.

The confluence of the Free Software movement and the PC revolution brought us a brief period where the future looked bright.

Then Apple and Google came along and destroyed Free Software by creating a lottery that tricks software developers into thinking they'll get rich off their stupid app, paying them well below market rates to keep their software non-free.

@erosdiscordia @garbados @morganmay The conspiracy, the gaslighting is in the statistics.

I have a friend who is a senior United Airlines aircraft engineer.

They make well over 100k a year.

He lives in a van in a Wal Mart parking lot, and barely sees his wife and kids who live hundreds of miles away, sometimes not every week.

This is what they can afford after healthcare, rent, etc. because the city's average house is over $1 million.

You can make 6-figures and be in poverty here.

Please repeat/boost this post if possible as I'd like to make connections with developers in Tokyo, if possible.Thank you. ❤️

I will be moving to Japan on a spousal visa which restricts me to work only 28h per week.

I'm an embedded systems and IoT developer with C, C++, ASM experience as well as personal projects in C++, Rust and OpenGL.

As I am looking for a job in Tokyo in a semi-western startup/small company, would anyone hire a more "part-time" worker? Thank you very much for any info.

@kaniini please fucking make openwebauth work with fediverse platforms. It's a great concept and doesn't rely on federating a million things everywhere.

The big aha moment for me was several years ago, when I switched from Diaspora. Diaspora as an app relies on federating everything, from status updates to photos to likes to profile data. This is all fine and dandy, except that the way it is implemented makes it very difficult for Diaspora to adequately approximate the feature set of Facebook.

Photo albums, for example, cannot exist with proper hierarchy. What are you going to do, federate every album and every photo in it? Embed reference data to point to a top level "photo album" object? Then send references to those albums to all of your contacts?

One thing that Hubzilla does super well is that it only sends just enough data to build a stream and accept interactions. All the fancier higher-order feature components and their data live on the remote instance you're looking at, instead of pulling those resources into your own instance.

ICANN granted Amazon.com the domain '.amazon' today, rather than the entire geographic region of the Amazon Basin.

Acts like this are colonial, obviously, but also a slap in the face to early internet promises of global representation + shared power. Its really sad.

When Medium dropped our access to their API without warning a few months ago, we decided to permanently end our integration with them.

Today we're happy to launch a new integration with an open publishing platform that can't do the same, Ghost.

Read more on their blog: https://blog.ghost.org/admin-api/

(Thanks to @johnonolan and the Ghost team for reaching out and helping with the implementation!)

      from The Ghost Blog
Ghost has always had a REST API at its very core, but for the first few years while we were fleshing out basic features there wasn't a whole lot you could do with it. Now, all your favourite apps work with Ghost! At the beginning of this year we announced a brand new, public Content API [https://docs.ghost.org/api/content/] making it possible to easily pull any content out of Ghost. This also made it possible, for the first time, to use Ghost as a fully headless CMS [https://blog.ghost.org/ja

#Creativity is a self-filling pitcher. No matter how often we pour our ideas onto the page, the blog, the fediverse, new ones or, at least, provoking variations fill the temporary void.

As a corollary, avoiding the step of pouring out the ideas can have the effect of merely bottling and capping the output, trapping the creative process itself.

Moral: Don't hold it in. Pour your ideas freely. Who cares if nobody else cares! And there's a chance someone will make something useful in the end!

I find myself regularly needing this advice. Falling into the trap that my creative output needs to be 'good' or, perhaps worse, 'important'.

Thanks for the reminder to just do stuff.

I really wish veg*ism wasn't presented as such an aggressive, black-and-white moral issue. When you tell someone that every time they eat meat they're committing murder, their only options are to change their lifestyle completely, feel shitty whenever they eat meat, or reject that narrative outright. Most people go for the last

But the fact is, our meat-heavy diet isn't sustainable, and we'll have to change it eventually if our species is to survive. So every step you take *is* helpful

Try to eat less meat. If you do eat meat, make less of it red meat. When eating plants, try and eat in season (and local, if possible). Try out some meat substitutes and meatless recipes - they're better than you think

But don't get overwhelmed trying to change everything at once, because by any measure you're better off doing a little than nothing at all
