"A browser for the people" should: (1) build in safety features such as adblock, noscript, https everywhere, request policy; and allow extensions to modify and enhance these behaviors for specific needs; (2) not hide important information (such as the URL ) from users; (3) allow extensions and derivatives to modify the interface and behavior of the browser; and (4) perform security checks of add-ons / extensions at install / upgrade time and startup time; disabling add-ons in the middle of a browsing session because a certificate expired is madness.
Oh, there's more, such as render HTML, but this would set ABFTP apart from all of the major competitors immediately.
@maiyannah@purplehippo Having Mozilla remotely disable working software with no easy way for the user to override that definitely isn't in keeping with the four freedoms.
It looks like 4 years ago Firefox added a system to centralize the addons and only allow ones pre-authorized by Mozilla. Mozilla then became a central authority determining the legitimacy of an addon.
That pretty much knocks out Freedom Zero with regard to Firefox: the freedom to run the program for any purpose.
@mangeurdenuage @moonman You aren't going to make all people like all other people at times. But I think that these lists are harmful because they allow just a few people to make decisions on what vast amounts of other people see, with no input or consideration for what those people see. It removes power from the user, and gives it to a privileged few. It is, in short, the tools of a ruling class to oppress a minority.
Removing to possibility of making money out of it makes it's non-free. It's a restriction of: -Freedom0: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose. And -Freedom2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others .
“Free software” does not mean “noncommercial”. A free program must be available for commercial use, commercial development, and commercial distribution. Commercial development of free software is no longer unusual; such free commercial software is very important. You may have paid money to get copies of free software, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.
A free program must offer the four freedoms to any user that obtains a copy of the software, provided the user has complied thus far with the conditions of the free license covering the software. Putting some of the freedoms off limits to some users, or requiring that users pay, in money or in kind, to exercise them, is tantamount to not granting the freedoms in question, and thus renders the program nonfree.
I legitimately wonder how further developing #postActiv is enabling persecution of minorities. As a Black person, I think the spread of #corpocentric networks in our communities is a big issue, because increasing "engagement" often means throwing extremists' messages in front of their targets, so that reactions (online fights) will ensue; and also because not every extremist is white or right-wing ... throwing everyone in one big tank spreads the sepsis everywhere. ("Septic tank" is probably a good analogy for large centralized walled-garden social sites.)
Meanwhile, smaller #socnet sites, federated together, with an easy ability for users to block problematic posters, where no site has the ability to offer much for data-miners or advertisers or police / security agencies or excessive-regulators seems to be the way to go. Maybe something like #Twister can evolve into a better alternative, but as of a few years ago, it was not there yet.
@lnxw37a2 There's so much smoke and mirrors in the Marvel movie figures because they *have* to show they have growth to keep getting money and keep getting paid. It can't be just good or even excellent. It has to *grow* to please their Disney overlords.
@bob @fribbledom@mastodon.social I pretty much mentally turn off whenever people mention "alt-right" in a negative sense now. That label is about as ubiqutous and accurate as calling everyone "nazis".
People are people. Quit dehumanizing them. Bob, you're better than to do that.
@maiyannah@Codeawayhaley@bob Depending on your hosting, they may terminate your arrangement and send you scrambling rather than deal with a DDOS. A few years ago, that was why Cloudflare seemed like a good deal to many people.
@maiyannah Didn't they spend years pre-marketing this movie? Of course it is going to have a lot of early momentum. Two or three years down the line, when they release the next expected super mega blockbuster elite box office champion, I think you're right that they'll be disappointed in the smaller uptake.
Also, they aren't going by number of seats purchased (that is, a figure that doesn't increase with inflation), but by dollar value of seats purchased.
@bob@alexbuzzbee "Most of the last ten thousand years after the agricultural revolution were also relatively egalitarian"
I disagree strongly with this statement. Various slavery-alikes were the norm thoughout most of history. If anything, the current situation is nation-states and corporations (their creation) reimposing slavery-like situations after a historically brief period of relief.
