@jk we're encouraged to have an opinion to the point where people who don't care one way or another, have to tell everyone to stop talking about a thing because they're not interested in the thing

and then the other side of the coin where people that do feel strongly about the thing, feel the need to control the discussion and fragment the conversation further into a series of one-sided takes on personal timelines directed at nobody

she WAS curled up against my pillow but apparently she is very fed up with my picture taking shenanigans and migrated to the other end of the bed to sprawl out

every time i look behind me to see willow curled up on the bed watching me i melt a little bit

the main problem i've seen on mastodon is that communication is just not what it needs to be tbh

i feel like that may be something we need to focus on first

my point being that a lot of users have been posting things on their own timelines today about this "discourse" and it basically feels like everyone is more intent on starting a new conversation based around them and their opinions than adding to an existing discussion. whether that is a fault of the platform or a fault of the users themselves...idk

especially when like...the entirety of mastodon having a discussion is Difficult and it's bound to break into tiny pieces

when you post a thing, are you hoping to get in on the discussion, or just share your opinion on the thing? because for the most part it feels like i'm personally posting things because i want others to care about my opinions, and that's about the time when i need to step back and not engage.

nobody needs my opinions so much as they need cooperative dialogue and efforts to reach some form of resolution

not to say in the slightest that we should stop sharing our ideas and discussing all these things we deem important because, well, they're important, even if others might not think so.

there isn't really any perfect online or even offline platform for discussion.

but we do need to be careful to think of how we're talking, who we're talking to, what we're hoping to accomplish with our posts, what consequences they might have, who we might be talking over or excluding, etc

as you can see, these thoughts are basically my own formulated within like half an hour's time. that's not really enough dwelling and it absolutely isn't enough feedback or dialogue.

yes, people can respond, but not everyone in the discussion will see it. even if they do, they might refrain from replying on grounds of not wanting to throw unsolicited opinions at strangers, or end up on blast by someone who could have influence in the community

microblogging platforms are hell for discussing serious and even casual issues. it's really hard to have a dialogue when we mostly only see the thoughts of ourselves and our inner circles, and it's difficult to really organise a way to see everyone's opinions on a topic in one place

not to mention microblogging encourages a "stream of consciousness" type of sharing where we post whatever's on our mind immediately without proper dwelling

whew, my dreams have been exhausting and generally uncomfortable lately. love those stress/anxiety dreams
