I am really worried about this latest mass shooting in the US. I feel like the response has been... different. It's one day later, and everyone seems to be over it already, which is scary.

I go to a news site, and of the "popular" posts for the day, this shooting isn't even #1 or #2.

Has the US finally reached "peak" mass shootings? Was Newtown kind of the breaking point?

@theoutrider I wish I could talk more about my own experiences with glacial release cycles, but I might accidentally say too much. :P

@theoutrider You know, for a completely closed system that wasn't connected to the larger internet, sure, but I'm sure all of these unpatched machines are merrily connected to the rest of the Internet, right.

@bea Isn't Mastodon about forming communities with like-minded individuals that you already have a connection to, and then, through federation, sometimes reaching out to other communities, right?

If someone is lonely, they could find an instance that's focused on a subject matter they're into, like a programming-focused Mastodon. I think of it like Reddit.

I gave up on doing this kind of thing with anyone, family member or otherwise. :p Either I'm terrible at explaining things, or it's the whole "backfire effect" issue touched upon by the Oatmeal comic, and it's pointless to even try. (I'd like to think that my crappy explaining is not more powerful than an observed and powerful neurological effect studied by Berkeley, but who knows!)

After reading this fascinating article about managing a web server on the backend that suddenly gets lots of traffic because of a one-time specific issue (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/09/how-to-hurricane-proof-a-web-server/), I've decided to finally start using Cloudflare for my business site, which is something I should've did a long time ago.

I live in the SE US and everyone is collectively losing their friggin' minds over this hurricane. People are buying shopping carts full of bottled water. It's insane.
