all I'm saying is expect a lot of "Facebook replacements", esp ones starting in the last year or from here on, that are explicitly meant as data harvesting operations

it's amazing how quickly "ha ha Mastodon safe space"

becomes "oh we totally want to keep operating with Mastodon properly let's all be very cooperative and oh yes our devs will shunt our shitbaggery to side accounts so we don't look total assholes"

it's almost like they're lying and they want to cling, remora-like, to the momentum Masto was lucky to find

as for efficiency: I'd take "unoptimized with decent people" over shitpeople with optimization every fucking day

They all had crappy episodes.

TOS had the lion's share, IMO, because it was from television's silver age and was trying to get better than that. TNG was trying to grow from those roots into something better (and, IMO, did so -- very few total crap episodes, almost no Spock's Brains at all, really).

Television's evolution left subarc formation for DS9 and VOY to handle (and they did okay, for the most part).

Between watching a random DS9 and a random VOY episode, I'd be torn.

The psychological truth, IMO, is that our threat modeling is going to evolve fundamentally.

We're shifting from a period where threats were primarily physical (our industrial shift came with more dangerous jobs, food problems, and security holes, versus the agrarian shift sounds familiar to me) to one with abstract, conceptual, long-term threats (like the agrarian shift, where finding out if your crops would grow took a long time, compared to finding out if you could hunt tigers).

perhaps we need something weird and novel

perhaps we need an archival service that preserves AND offers whoever owns the original the option of copying the preserved copy at a later date for their own uses

as in the library of Alexandria -- you can come in with books, but they WILL get copied, etc. etc.

it'd be tricky but I think it'd be possible with the right legalese, as long as the archival service ITSELF is a nonprofit with open ledgers and such
