@jimrutt you might want to give https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/ a glance.

@jimrutt probably not a notion that would get a lot of traction around here. this is a network pretty heavy on exactly the populations most likely to suffer from "real name" policies. people who aren't necessarily out to the general public, their families, or employers about being gay, furry, trans, politically radical, etc.
that said, there's probably no reason you couldn't set up an instance that required legal names / verified identities.

@likecroft @Altruest good to know. i may get back into that frame of mind one of these years, but right now most of my tolerance for really disturbing intake is occupied with the news & the occasional history text.

@jim_mccusker yeah, end-to-end encryption would be great. i'm not sure whether it's something the fediverse's overall design is ever going to accommodate. seems like maybe it would be easier to pull off for direct messages, but still...
have you looked into secure-scuttlebutt? it might be much closer to what you want. fully distributed, built around keys, and private messages are e2e encrypted.

@likecroft @Altruest a friend was just telling me yesterday that _the underground railroad_ is pretty amazing.
i'm also kind of boggled by how few answers i had for "black male sf author" that weren't delaney.

@kavbojka @Altruest i've read a bunch of steven barnes collabos with niven/pournelle (i was too young to be very good at processing their politics), but never any of his standalone stuff. will have to give this one a shot.

@jim_mccusker i think of this place roughly how i thought of twitter in that sense: i don't put anything on here that'd be damaging for the general public to see.
(i would treat facebook the same way if i still used it - because you shouldn't trust facebook either.)

@jim_mccusker @jim_mccusker you can make follows require your authorization, i think - go into settings -> edit profile -> [ ] lock account.
again, i _really_ wouldn't use mastodon for anything super sensitive, since you have to trust people running servers and it federates with services that don't work quite the same way, but there is some granularity in who sees what by default.

@jim_mccusker you can set posts to "followers only". there are limits on how much you should trust the security of that (or of direct messages), but it's kinda useful.

@melissamcewen ah ha. i'd love to have been a fly on the wall for the "we should stop warning users about this" conversation.

@melissamcewen (which i mean neither as a defense of slack nor a victim-blamey "people are dumb" take. i'm just capable of being caught by surprise that we don't all assume the worst about any cloud data silo at this point in history.)

@melissamcewen the odd thing to me about this story is that everyone didn't _already_ assume their bosses could read everything on slack... i mean, i'm surprised that there weren't already features in place for it.

@khaos_farbauti file under "entirely unsurprising properties of etcd installations", at least based on the last time i had to work with it.

@amylsacks i pinboard stuff constantly; may eventually write some custom management system to supplant that.
