@trashyfins it of course goes without saying that the source is generally illegible garbage and the comments are lies where not absent.

@erAck well, a separate but related problem is that most technology is shit.

20 years of programming and a decade of involvement with documentation efforts have gotten to the point where i'm perpetually infuriated with how much technology is badly (or totally un-) documented.
if your shit doesn't have a usable manual, your shit is half-finished at best.

@ajroach42 @djsundog @keithzg same. i keep meaning to set aside a weekend day for this, but weekend days are in short and precious supply, and i have had the sense that i'm probably going to get burned anyway.
i'd love to find otherwise.

@Alonealastalovedalongthe (tbh i guess maybe they aren't as big as i thought? bigger than a lot of grasshopper species anyway.

@sporks i'm on slack, discord, and basecamp for work, always have an email client open, and check mastodon too often, so this happens to me like 10-15 times a day now.

Spoken to a group of programmers at the 1996 OOPSLA Convention by the architect Christopher Alexander, who wrote a foundational book on patterns.
"The moral preoccupation with the need for a good environment, and for the living structure of built environment, and the objective nature of that question, is largely accepted [in architecture]. I do not know whether that sort of moral component exists in computer science, or in software engineering"
In 2018 we can quite confidently say it doesn't.

@tuxcrafting speaking as someone who used to work a no-hope job for shit wages as a temp-agency peon hired out to their subcontracted mailroom, they were as cluelessly adrift in a sea of capitalist hypocrisy as anybody, and probably deserved their ignominious fate.
(that said, fuck oracle forever.)

@bethskw i would bet good money that your 6 year old is better at slither.io than i am. that game turned _harsh_ after people got real good at it.

@artsyhonker i haven't been routinely involved in a faith/church community for a lot of years, and i've been away from the ambient rhythms of farm country for just about as long. the round of the ritual year and the seasons are two of the things i miss most in life.

@ajroach42 see, the thing is, you inadvertently started a stealth Heinlein Thread, and Heinlein Threads have been a reliable form of Internet Take Machine for as long as there has been an internet.

@melissaaveryweir had some cat oats a while back. the cat entirely refused to eat them until they pretty well died and turned to straw, but it's possible we have a weird cat.

@jplebreton yep. that and the related industry-wide decision that it's time to kill the entire traditional desktop computing paradigm post-haste.

@lawremipsum i can never get very far into straightforward, untroubled discussion of things like this as a regular old no-big-deal consumer good without getting all twitchy.
"hopefully this highly capable mobile sensor package exfiltrating its surveillance of your home to the cloud will get alexa soon so amazon can get in on this cute little slice of the panopticon"
fucking, just. goddammit.
