@katebowles @Downes Your conversation got me thinking about the English spoken in Inuvik - we called, a mix of English & Inuvialuktun. I don’t think I realized how special it was at the time. But it made it more flexible, varied & creative. One of the girls I worked with took to calling me a “muksaun.” I knew from her tone, it kindly meant “pain in the ass.” I later heard it used about others, I used it myself. I didn’t realize until much later she’d made it up just for me.

@katebowles A week ago in the midst of the movers dismantling my house, my son moved out without fanfare and before either of us was really ready. As he left, I found myself fending off waves of grief, desperately looking for a quiet corner to mourn his leaving, the pain of the choices I made that led to his leaving. We both know “it is for the best” but that knowledge doesn’t seem to ease the hurt very much. I miss him.

@lauraritchie Yeah. That’s kind of the point. Pick three. If you end up doing other more important things, then you picked wrong (and reprioritized later).

The most important thing is to get over the inertia that comes from being overwhelmed & do *something* #threethings

Feeling overwhelmed about tomorrow, so gonna try the trick I told my daughter in such cases. Focus on the most important three things only:

1. Print docs needed by new employer
2. Show up at new hire orientation
3. Write up draft plan for book chapter

That’s it. I can do that. Everything else will just need fall away. #thinkingsmall

I really like our new house, our chance at a new life. Things are soooo busy, and yet I feel like I can breathe. I feel free.

That feeling might pass, as it has before. But for now, I will embrace it and soak it in. Today is about new possibilities and fresh starts.

@katebowles Maybe we walk arm in arm with them for a while, acknowledging both the weight of it, the healthiness of feeling it, and the courage of admitting it?

Four of my kids just left together to go to a trampoline park together. After last week, this feels like a minor (sorry major) miracle.

Nothing feels better as a parent than to see a child who has been down & blue smiling and having fun with siblings.
