Hey y'all, I need a signal boost please. My friend and their mom are in danger of being evicted if they can't raise about 12 thousand dollars by the end of the month. They are both so lovely and good, their mom does so much community outreach and she really needs help right now. If you could retoot this or even donate that would mean the world to me and my friend. Thank you all <3 #signalboost#crowdfunding https://www.gofundme.com/save-barbara-caporales-home
This is a really important time to push free and open source alternatives to #Patreon! I've considered using @Liberapay, but was afraid I had to use Patreon to get the network effect.
All this patreon BS has me wondering, again, how it would be possible to get some $ to people who work on open source and - incoming twist - *don't do a lot of coding* but spend a ton of time doing stuff like testing, wrangling tickets, writing docs, and so on. All of which is critical work, almost none of which is acknowledged much less compensated.
I'm not sure the municipal bureaucracy would be able to deal with #crowdfunding a #Library. If municipal politicians even understood #crowdfunding in the first place.
@xahlee That's not actually true. Newspapers and magazines, though they generally had some subscription revenue, were always dependent on advertising. TV and radio broadcasts (in the US, where most broadcasters are not tax supported) is wholly dependent on advertising.
Why? Because few people would or could pay what it would cost to present their content without the ads. This carried over to Web sites and mobile "apps" for the same reason. Each individual has a very limited pool of funds, and so they are unlikely to blow it all on supporting a very small number of the sites or apps or magazines or newspapers that they use.
Ad-supported sites and apps, like ad-supported newspapers, magazines, and broadcasts before them, exist because micro-payments is a failed concept and no other concept has arisen to fund so many content providers. Indeed, I am concerned that #Patreon and #crowd-funding type sites may soon crest and begin their decline. As these sites are the alternate funding method of the day, this could push even more sites into advert-land.
The company @Purism have announced a collaboration between them and the people of @monero to build a cash-like, digital payment system for the Librem 5,
The the recently successfully-crowdfunded GNU/Linux smartphone already counts the backing of @matrix, @gnome and @kde.
