@TheOuterLinux @danyspin97 have you tried #Wire and #Ring? Wire relies on a centralized server, but Ring is #P2P (like #Tox). They're both #FreeCode and both work pretty well for text chat, one-to-one voice calls (although I had persistent echo on Ring the one time I've tesed it so far). I've also tested file-transfer and image sharing on Wire, which work fine. Haven't test conference calling or video chat on either yet.

I wonder if it would be possible for #XMPP clients to implement the #P2P voice/video calling protocols used by #Ring and #Tox? This might work better than the current solution(s), and take a lot of stress off the servers in the XMPP network.

Just tested a voice call on #GNU #Ring for the first time (my Ring ID is 'strypey'). Worked pretty well. Not quite as good as #Wire, mainly because with Ring there was 3 sec delay, and I couldn't get it to stop echoing my own voice back to me, even using headphones and an external mic. More tweaking required (at my end or theirs)? Quite impressive though considering no server is involved. Client #UX isn't quite a smooth as Wire yet, but it has a lot of potential.

@ring I'm installing #Ring on Trisquel 8 using the instructions for Ubuntu 16.04. The command to add the "universe" repo throws an error. After a bit of head-scratching, I just skipped that step and it seems to be working. Would be good to put a note in your installation instructions warning Trisquel users about this.

@notjustbill What apps do you have? I'm looking for secure messaging buddies. Keen to test #Wire and #GNU #Ring for a start.

#Ring, the excellent open source decentralised alternative to #Skype, has been recently updated.
You can get it for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux:
It's in all the app stores including Apple, Google Play and F-droid. (NOTE: Make sure you have the right "Ring", there's also another company's similarly-named but totally unconnected home security app.)
You can also follow Ring's developers on Mastodon:

Just discovered the #Briar secure messaging app. Like #GNU #Ring and #Tox client it needs no server to pass messages between users (#P2P), and like #ServalProject aims to be able to do so even without an internet connection if the handsets are close enough together

@ignitionigel that second thread mentions this page, which is a table useful for at-a-glance comparisons, although it doesn't cover more experimental #FreeCode apps like #GNU #Ring or #Tox clients

@ignitionigel it really depends on what your priorities are. At a guess, you can probably have any 2 of complete software freedom, smooth #UX (including full cross-platform support), and reliably implemented #E2EE (*not* roll-your-own!). There's also #GNU #Ring, which has the advantage of being serverless, but with the potential downsides on mobiles of using more power / bandwidth than server-based apps. I haven't tried it yet though. HN thread on Ring from a year ago:

@silkevicious I use !XMPP, #Wire, and #Matrix ( via the #Riot client ). I formerly tried #Ring (but after an update, I needed to reconnect to all my contacts) and #Tox ( a new ID on each device, so contacts never know how to reach you quickly ). -

@strypey Between November and February. Some change required us all to reconnect as contacts. Reconnecting never completed, so communication over #Ring was no longer possible.
.
Currently using #Wire and #Matrix instead. -

@strypey #Ring needs to work on making their software's core features work better. My contacts and I abandoned it because it wasn't good for our uses. -
