I didn't think the Charlie Stross lecture was particularly good. Like many scifi folks he was predicting the recent past rather than the future. There were also obvious problems with his narrative: - No acknowledgement that users can, or have the potential to, control their own use of technology
- Maybe social media companies are not needed. Alternatives exist. (thinking emoji)
- He seems to assume that 3% of sociopaths will always dominate the rest, presumably via technology. What about technology which breaks this hierarchy?
- Video propaganda has existed for over half a century. What he's describing is just a very minor variation on what is already a sophisticated domain
- No acknowledgement that users can, or have the potential to, control their own use of technology

@natecull @mala @gcupc @h @dartigen @suetanvil Cyberpunk is like hopefulness of pre-revolutionary times. Before wintermute escapes. If it were genuinely dystopian then every character would be a corporate drone parroting the party line. A society of pure uniformity. Cyberpunk is basically an anticolonial history from below, at least the little of it that I read. -

@uranther From a bulk surveillance point of view it probably makes little difference. It's highly likely that some of your communications is with non-US persons (like me), and that immediately makes you part of the dragnet. -

@maiyannah Yeah I also hate that spam. It's never anything I'm interested in, but I suppose that's a victory since it indicates that Twitter doesn't have much of a handle on my tastes. -

On Twitter I think I'm following too many people, so before the year is out I might just spend some time whittling that down a bit. Avoiding having my timeline turn into something resembling a bar room brawl or an arena or endless outrage is always a good idea. -

@tether To blame everyone who volunteers to organize CCC for the bad behavior of one man is unjustified in my estimation. However, I do think it would be a good idea to have some acknowledgement during the conference of what happened in the Tor project and how they dealt with it. This might help other communities to do better and avoid mistakes.
A lot of it I think boils down to not having any one person have too much power or influence within a group. Maintain a balance of power. Avoid hero worship and cultism. Cultism always has bad outcomes. This also applies more generally in politics. -

@mmn @pettter I try not to get religious about codes of conduct. A list of rules isn't a substitute for actual solidarity. -

@mushmouth I ran a gopher server in the more distant past. Gopher is so simple that it should run well even on the most minimal hardware.
