I saw somebody looking for a Medium alternative and suggested Dreamwidth, I'm happy they seem to like it!

I forget how many people don't know about Dreamwidth. If you want old-school blogging, good accessibility, RSS, no ads, no trackers, no Javascript, and good people if you're looking for community, I really can't recommend it highly enough.

    Ah this reminds me.

Serverless architecture has a name since at least the 60s.

It's called Mainframes. You're running stuff on someone's Mainframe, in a proprietary OS.

I now know the name of my sworn enemy...

    "Serverless architecture"

What idiot would voluntarily lock themselves to a vendor by implementing all their business-critical code against a proprietary cloud API?

I hate those web control panels. Where's my shell prompt? I want to check my process list and attach a debugger.

If you love Firebase and Amazon AWS, you're part of the problem. Argue all you want. You may be right, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it.

my real theory is that mastodon and the fediverse and other new web platforms got the next generation on it and while its messy they're growing and a good number of these people are going to grow and end up doing really important and powerful things

"Mastodon will begin keeping track who you engage with without following. For example, if you end up often boosting cat pictures that your friend boosts into your home timeline, perhaps you would want to follow the author of those cat pictures. The new API method will show such results. No user interface yet."

Hacking on my OCaml project of the evening: providing relevant apis suitable for installing in different SaaS projects that I might want to deliver.

Goal is to have a well defined module providing a API & SQL for being able to build, e.g., games or business concepts without worrying too much about the user management part of the code.

Thinking it might wind up being a single Docker image working as a microservice.

"An Indigenous opera singer is bringing back his community's traditions and songs...

The classically-trained tenor used wax cylinder recordings of his ancestors singing in the early 1900s, which had been locked away in the national archive for decades.

Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa — translated as "Songs of the River People" — is sung entirely in Wolastoqey, a language fewer than 100 people speak."

Currently learning about the Third Reich. Hearing all this stuff about the US progression along the road to Nazidom, and seeing people’s denials and other people’s pleas for action. It makes me realise how hard it must have been in the 1930s to

    1) figure out what was actually happening

    and

    2) figure out WTF to do about it.

Don’t think I’ll be making the mistake again of writing the people who lived in that period off as morally inferior because they “allowed” the rise of Hitler + the Nazis.

How to download the profiles of every ICE agent on LinkedIn. https://github.com/antiboredom/ice-linkedin The demonstrators blocking ICE agents inside their Portland HQ are already inspiring a nationwide movement around the #SurroundICE hashtag on Birdsite. As individuals, they can also be surrounded where they live, socialize, worship and shop.

@wion @clhendricksbc point of note: the airport protests of '17 were effectual. They were spontaneous (same day as the Muslim ban 1.0), geo-local, and served to pressure government agents at a moment of crisis.

That was a useful protest. I would reckon there are times in the future when a large mass of people descending at a moment can force an issue. But scheduled protests in Democratic strongholds? *meh*

@jankoekepan I don't particularly think the Paranoid Style in American politics is particularly new. But the current form is frighteningly awful and getting worse; the broad social trend I am sensing is that most people are acquiescing fairly quietly.

@jankoekepan at a stroke? no. no one is saying that.

but certain ideologies were freed to speak openly. and the white house exerts tremendous pressure politically and socially. you can watch the NYT buckle under the pressure on the regular. over time this influence alters the culture.
