Logged into #Movim for the first time using an existing XMPP account. That's cool, I didn't understand until recently that it was that easy to test. My first public post on Movim is here:

Next step, trying logging into a Salut-a-Toi server ...

@stevenroose Also, questions have been raised here about whether it's really secure to do E2EE on the web, if it's being done with JS. See the thread starting here:

I love #Wire, and would use it every day, except for that fact that I can't get it working on my ancient Android/Linux device (4.2.2) either (despite heaps of help from their helpdesk), and I can't use it on on my GNU/Linux laptop (#Trisquel 8) because it's blocked by the Great Firewall, and our #VPN service won't work on my laptop ATM

@stevenroose I haven't tried ProtonMail, no. From memory, I tried to register at one point, and was asked for a phone number, or some money, or something else I wasn't prepared to give them just to set up a test account.

I was pointing out that BLAG was broken and needed to be removed from the list back in 2012:

The obsolete #BLAG distro is finally being removed from the list of GNU/Linux distros the #FSF encourages people to use, after formally telling FSF the project is dead (something that's been obvious for years):

    > A first look at Wiley's blog suggests he's too 'Ostrom' in his perspective

Yes, it's very much written on economists' terms, but I still think it's worth being conscious of some of the differences between local commons, environmental commons, and digital commons. I enjoyed the way David's piece challenged me to question my own assumptions about 'digital commons', and grease up any models that may have been at risk of hardening into dogma ;-P

    > Did you noticed how you keep talking about #users (using a software perspective), while I'm talking about #people (from a political freedom perspective)?

Stallman talks about "users" all the time, because from the POV of software freedom, the person whose freedom most needs protecting is the end *user*. What do you think you achieve by implying you're superior to other people because of your word choices? This kind of moralistic, holier-than-thou language game gets us nowhere.

I would love to find a sponsor for a #SummerOfCommons, where web development students could spend a summer doing things like helping a not-for-profit out of the tangle of incompatible licenses and improperly attributed works they've ended up in.

@funkwhale Have you had any interest from the Archive.org folks in running their own instance(s) of #FunkWhale, and hooking it up to the various audio collections they store? That would be an amazing boost to the range of works available to the FW federation. Does FunkWhale include the ability for instances to mirror collections, or use #WebTorrent like #PeerTube does, to reduce the load on popular instances?

This is awesome! Great work @funkwhale . I presume that once normal transmission resumes at the #FMA, both #Archive.org and open.audio will be able to fill any gaps in your copies of the FMA collections.

In the short term, this is definitely good news. But in the longer term, it could be good or bad news, depending on whether Kitsplit are more of a #BeWelcome or an #AirBnB:

The #FreeMusicArchive report they have been acquired by a camera rental platform called #KitSplit, and will resume normal transmission in the new year. Kudos to the KitSplit crew for stepping in to keep the #FMA alive:

@drequivalent I'm sure patches / pull requests are welcome ;) In fact, after the recent discussions about helping #Dreamwidth support #ActivityPub, I wonder if there's a place for a crack team of federation ninjas to kick into action whenever a project wants to improve their federation feature set?
