Hi all, I've set up a Mastodon instance using Docker and noticed that there's an issue with the setup script. It needs to be run twice, failing halfway through the first time. I'm looking for feedback on this issue here: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/11368

I'm not familiar with Ruby so I'm mostly lost as to what to do to fix the issue. I'm also not sure if this issue needs to be resolved with the setup script or the Dockerfile.

    > I’m guessing this is not the case except in really huge outages. Back when physical phone lines were common, I don’t ever remember losing phone service during a power outage.

Is the same true for cable Internet? Id assumed that cable companies hadn't built out the same level of backups for residential lines (since their legacy business of TV delivery wouldn't have needed it). But, thinking about it, I don't know where I got that idea

    > What size UPS would one recommend to run a home router + a single non-gaming computer for 12 hours?

Possibly an ignorant question: do you think there's much chance of an extended power outage that doesn't also knock out your data connection? I guess I thought data usually went down too.

Also, are following the Upside project? https://gitlab.com/esr/upside It's an open hardware UPS—it's not anywhere near ready, but could be a solution in a few years

    > I can give you few models [of ThinkPads] that I think are a good bet.

Well, I'm *probably* going to get a Libem 13, largely to support @purism's work—I've actually already ordered it, but started looking at ThinkPads due to difficulty getting the Librem delivered (I'm still negotiating with Purism).

So, about the Librem's specs (13" screen, i7 CPU, 16 GB RAM). It'll be my main dev computer, but I'll SSH to a (not-yet-built) desktop to compile.

    > A used, $275 Thinkpad is the happiest I've ever been with a laptop. I love the industrial design, excellent build materials, how easy it is to open and get to the internals, the trackpoint, the keyboard...

So, if I were to get a ThinkPad, which one would you recommend? I had a thread asking for recommendations the other day and @mike and @kev were talking up the x1 carbon. But it doesn't seem as easy to open up/upgrade

So I'm not sure I get all of the proposed anti-Nazi features planned for Mastodon, but I want to point out some thinking that I've heard from a few researchers now. One of the drivers of radicalization is when certain "facts" or points of view are readily available, while more established truths and arguments are either unsaid or hidden behind paywalls or otherwise partitioned away. 1/?

I was partly joking. But I am a bit confused.

    > If the CEO of Keybase thinks that throwing his computers away is a solid infosec move then we should just all stop using Keybase.

Why is that a particularly dumb thing to think? In the article, the CEO states that (because Slack denied the issue was on its end) he was assuming that an attacker *might* have gained root access to his device.

At that point, is it wrong to abandon the device?

    > “threw away all my computers”. Well. That doesn’t sound like the action of someone now knows how infosec works.

What do you mean/have in mind?

(Sometimes I feel like throwing away all my computers and *not* replacing them is the only winning infosec move, but that's really neither here nor there)

Replacing openSSL with Rustls can improve execution time, memory usage, and security! https://www.zdnet.com/article/a-rust-based-tls-library-outperformed-openssl-in-almost-every-category/

The potential performance improvements will probably motivate adoption even in C/C++ programs.

Open request for anyone with any specific feedback on my approach or their interactions with me in my capacity as a free software maintainer to share that feedback. I sync up with my collaborators on these questions fairly often, but not usually the general public. Feedback is taken seriously and acted upon, positive or negative. Here on Mastodon is fine (short-form), or via email (long-form): sir@cmpwn.com.
