@xxbc I've been a happy Debian user for years. It doesn't have a focus, so you are able to run anything. All the main Desktop environments are available. Python, of course, is supported. I tend to install the main Python packages (including the dev packages) and then use pip for specific modules, apps & frameworks. I also install at the user level and in virtualenvs. I value stability, as I want to spend my time working not tinkering.
@Coinneach To be honest I think trying to avoid "upset" is a blight on rational debate. If people are going to get upset over differing opinions then that is their problem, they need to rationally defend their standpoint. If they do get all defensive and upset, in my experience, it shows the weakness of their argument
"Going on a march doesn't need to have a direct outcome. It makes people feel better, feel connected and feel together. It can be an end. It doesn't have to be a means." Sage wisdom from @IanDunt@twitter.com on the latest @RemainiacsCast@twitter.com. (Bit paraphrased because I don't want to rewind!)
@bob According to Hypolite Petovan (Hubzilla dev), when interviewed on FLOSS Weekly podcast last week, ActivityPub integration was on the roadmap but might take a couple of years.
The intention was to make/keep #Hubzilla the most connected in the #Fediverse.
Facebook put out a patent application for a face recognition system that will match your face in stores and correlate it with your social media profile to assign you a shopper trust level.
@onreact@alcinnz Yup, a very valid point. It's a human nature problem. Be measured and considerate, nobody will notice you. Be outrageous and controversial, become the talk of the town. Trump, Katie Hopkins and countless others have tred this path to "success".
@notclacke "In today’s world, it does not matter how big or small you are, but to what extent you cherish the values of freedom, solidarity and democracy."
Fine words, which should be practised by every country.
I've set up a couple of sites for non-techies using Lektor. It is a static site generator, but with a simple CMS type front-end. Creating content doesn't even require knowledge of markup.
@thinkMoult@Gargron@officialcjunior@angristan@bobstechsite Disclaimer: I am new around here. Under preferences there is export/import for users you block/follow/mute. Also request for media. There is no option for posts (which makes sense as this data is user@instance specific)
@Gargron@thinkMoult@officialcjunior@angristan@bobstechsite To be clear: you're talking about Sean's Venn diagram which I included in my blog? It does have Mastodon within the ActivityPub circle. If an error in my text, I'm happy to correct. I had a feeling federation/fediverse were interchanged but I happen to prefer the latter.
@artik "Organic" growth is good because these users are more likely to stick. When the next Cambridge Analytica type scandal hits, the fediverse should be ready to accept lots of new users.
@artik Thanks, I'll follow up on that. The point in my blog was not so much about me, but rather that my impressions might be indicative of 100s or 1000s of potential users. You won't hear from them they will just depart silently.
