@sambiohazard in not really. I've played with them on occasion, but nothing serious.

@tdemin that's the thing, I don't need a desktop replacement as it's pretty much redundant at this point.

@sheogorath I've already got a Synology NAS, so don't really need one of those. Maybe I will just sell it...

@AndrzejL we have a cat, she's OK, but I don't like how everything has to be on their terms.

@switchingsocial great idea! Kinda like the hootsuite UI if anyone every used that.

Great to see so many new people trying #Mastodon :blobcheer:
Most common barrier for them seems to be the interface, but this could perhaps be made much easer with a single tweak of the Mastodon UI: allow a double-width home column, either optionally or as default.
Twitter has several columns like Mastodon, but the main feed is wider so it's always clear which column is which. There's a sense of focus that Masto lacks.
Has this been proposed? If not, can someone propose it?

I'm using my laptop that much now that I have decided to get a docking station for my study, but that would then render my desktop pretty useless.
So, the question is, do I sell the desktop or do something interesting with it? If the latter, what?

@AndrzejL no home is complete until it has a dog, IMHO.

@brandon the MATE menu might be an Ubuntu thing then, I'm not sure...but I know a guy who will know, @Wimpress

@Ghosty ahhh right, I see now. I assumed that you were getting both drives new. That's certainly a way of increasing the storage capacity then. I'd be careful though, as using disks of different ages in a RAID can be risky, due to the potential of the older drive failing prematurely.

@song @codesections @kelbot........Fosstodon isn't designed to be a replacement for fb or Twitter (in my opinion), as they're not comparable. Facebook is for personal friends and interests, Twitter is a platform for the loudest people to shout louder and louder in order to portray themselves how they want.
Fosstodon is nothing more than a collection of like minded people who enjoy talking to one another about things that interest them.

@song @codesections @kelbot the thing for me is that there is no "circle" to get in to. Just join in the conversations. It is very rare for a conversation to take place that is personal, so anyone can join in a conversation.
We deliberately want to move away from bots etc, so that won't happen here. The platform isn't designed to hold your attention for hours on end, like fb etc. It's designed to spark interesting conversations with real people.......

@mattmcnutt @RiderOfGiraffes I spent a Christmas in NZ once, same thing there (obviously). Christmas on the beach was so weird for me!

When youβre watching a series on Netflix (or similar) and it comes to the Christmas special...but itβs summer, it just feels so wrong!

@brandon how long is a piece of string?
It depends on the usage and requirements. For example, a gemer's machine, or a multimedia machine will have a much shorter lifespan than a generalist's machine.

@brandon @cigarBGuitarEfx @h4ck3r9 I'm confused (not difficult, i know)...
I can hit the super key and search for an item in Ubuntu MATE. I can do this using either the mate menu, or the brisk menu. Am I missing something?

@Modern_Industrial I personally think that Mastodon is very simple to grasp, however the point of entry definitely needs work.
The Twitter OP has a point, unfortunately. Having to pick from thousands of instances, with no simple way to catalogue, search and filter, is extremely difficult.
I think it puts many users off.

@mmf I agree, there are many instances of free software being gratis - it's everywhere.
However services like RSS readers tend to be less common, so you're probably going to have to stump up come cash if you want it to be free (freedom).
Apologise if I wasn't clear in my previous comment. π
