    @mmf you can't have you cake and eat it unfortunately. Open source projects need support, so you will either need to pay for hosting, or pay for a service.

    You may get a free service (in both meanings of the word), but I think you will be lucky to get that.

    If you simply want a free (gratis) rss reader, try feedly. If you want free (freedom) then you may need to stump up a small amount of cash.

    @mmf tiny tiny rss. Not sure if it's free software, or just open source. I've been using it for year without issue though.

    After sleeping on it, I think #Mastodon should rename ‘instances’ to ‘Communities.’

    Instances feels too technical and I see even savvy people struggling to understand it.

    I argue communities would make much more sense. It denotes much of the purpose behind _why_ this service has different instances, and many people will already be familiar with the concept from Reddit (the, what, sixth most popular site on the net?).

    @joseph @mike @codesections Slack (and MatterMost if you want open source) is basically a collection of chat rooms. That's it.

    You can have a business instance of Slack, then have sales chat (aka channel), IT chat, HR chat etc.

    @mastohost I think it's a balancing act, you need to do the best by your customers, but also consider other users who are sharing an instance.

    Burst resources are very difficult to cater for on shared hosting. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will work out in the end. 👍

    I saw a toot earlier about not flooding the introductions hashtag if you're an old user, so that new users don't get lost in the noise.

    Suggestion: leave the #introductions hashtag for new users, and use #reintroductions for us long-term users making posts for newbies deciding who to follow.

    @art great video Art, really enjoyed that. +1 for the ThinkPad here. I was recommended a ThinkPad by @popey a few months ago, I picked up an x1 Carbon for a little over £300. By far the best laptop I've ever owned, and the linux support is perfect.

    I'd love an XPS 13, but why pay ~2k when I can get such a fantastic machine that meets my needs for a fraction of the cost.

    @codesections @mooshoe @mariusz @mike Toot no 3...

    If we don't get another member, that's fine. We have around 500 now and the conversation (like this one) is dynamic, interesting and most importantly, civil.

    We may continue to grow, and if we do, great. But Mike and I will do our utmost to continue to be a part of the community.

    Our patrons make that a lot easier (thanks everyone!) and I'm sure there will be many willing volunteers to mod as we grow, just like @joseph.

    @codesections @mooshoe @mariusz @mike Toot no 2...

    That's also the reason I decided to go with Masto.host when I started fosstodon.org. I'm a technical guy, and Mike is a sysadmin, so we definitely have the skills to host ourselves, but like I said, we want to part of the community. Plus @hugo is incredible - we don't have to worry about a single thing, just our (very low) monthly fee.

    @codesections @mooshoe @mariusz @mike great discussion here folks! Few thoughts from me (this may be a couple Toots)...

    Our bubble is pretty niche (FOSS) so we're unlikely to ever get 10s of thousands of members. Add to that the fact that there are other instances within this niche too - linux rocks and Foss.social to name just 2, that niche is further diluted.

    To me, that's a good thing. Like codesections said - we want to be part of the community, not have to run it.
