@codesections it's completely managed, so we can spend our time enjoying the community instead of worrying about maintenance. The service and uptime are both really good.

I could have rolled my own instance, but I've don't that before, and I've always ended up getting burned out. This works really well for me.

@cwcopa @codesections @fosstodon @mike @h4ck3r9 we host with Masto.host. It starts at $5/month, but it's charged on amount of users, so as it grows, so do the charges. I think the smallest package does up to 100 users, so it's great for starting out.

@klaatu nope. Most I have to do is 2. I'm generally on Firefox with Ubuntu.

@gdorn personally, I pay for BitWarden and have them host it. I've had no issues so far. Although they have never had a 3rd party security audit, I'm happy to run that risk, given their other controls (encryption used, hashing and salting).

@gdorn because it's not just me on the instance. Just because I find it frustrating, others might like it.

@codesections it's definitely slower elsewhere in the world. The server is hosted in the UK, so Sweden is the quickest.

Im currently looking in to getting a CDN configured (probably CloudFlare) to speed that up elsewhere.

@h4ck3r9 @ivan I do really like the notifications button that pops up on Mastalab. Overall I much prefer Tusky though.

@ivan I killed the instance, it was getting zero interaction and usage, so it seemed a waste. I suggest we create a telegram group or something?

@g yeah, they aren't as good, that's the problem.

It's a catch 22. To be better they need to be more popular, but to be more popular they need to be better.

@g they really are. I just don't see an alternative to maps or YouTube at the moment.

I belie e font squirrel are pretty good, but like I said, I haven't had time to explore my options yet. I will do though...eventually.

@g the plan is to move over to another service, or self-host the fonts, I just haven't got around to it.

The de-googling process was more around my usage of their core services (mail, social, analytics, browser etc.) rather than replacing every facet Google from my life.

I said from the start that I'll only move from Google if I can find something better. I still use a whole lot of Google - android, maps, YouTube etc. But it's a lot less than it was.
