@PresGas That's actually another interesting possibility: naming. in German, we talk about wasps, bee, bumblebees and ants as being the eusocial insects. As most people don't know much about the non-state building insects, all wasps are "yellow jackets" for us. But perhaps they aren't and we wouldn't know because we use different words? But that would only explain a difference between the US and EU, not CH and UK.

@jofazepa Yeah, the situations seem to indicate that your parents should have done more insect-related education. π @griffinkate

@unlofl my impression was that without yellow jackets this poll makes no sense. @griffinkate

@GwenfarsGarden Hahaha! Having been to Australia recently, I'd say that with sharks and spiders and poisonous jellyfish and squid⦠wasps are OK? @griffinkate

@jofazepa And where was this? Were you super clumsy as a kid or did you have a wasp nest near the house, or do you think wasps are very aggressive?

@Wolf480pl I don't think you can get stung and not notice it. Unless you're immune against their poison in which case... I don't know? Report to the X-Mansion or something. π

@GwenfarsGarden That's what @griffinkate has been telling me and I felt like we were living in two different worlds. How can it be that wasps are "very aggressive" in the UK and not elsewhere? That's what I'm still puzzled by.

@fool Sounds like a valid approach to me! I'm not just interested in people who are not afraid of wasps! After all, I don't even know whether friends and family and co-workers are afraid of wasps or not. Perhaps that also tells you something: I don't know anybody who has let it be known that they are afraid of wasps. Just, slightly uncomfortable such that other people might feel like saying: "just don't make any sudden moves" or "don't swallow it!" (when they're sitting on food)

@griffinkate Now I want to know! I don't think I have many followers in the UK and polls are quite limited, I'm just interested in seeing whether respondents are closer to 0% (my impression), 100% (your impression), or 62% (your result in that Twitter poll). Thank you for running that poll.

Hey, we have polls! I care about wasps. @griffinkate talked about running a poll here. We have polls on Mastodon!
So: Have you been stung by a wasp, ever?[ ] I have been stung.
[ ] I have never been stung.
[ ] I never go outside.
[ ] What is a wasp? -

Yesterday I was inspired by a conversation with @kensanata to do a poll on birdsite about people's experiences of wasp stings.
62% of UK-based respondents (57% of total respondents) had been stung by a wasp at least once in their life.
What really surprised me was the 38% of UK-based respondents who've NEVER been stung by a wasp. I assumed almost everybody had, at some point in their lives.
The number of overseas respondents was probably too low to be meaningful. 5% of total respondents were overseas people who've been stung, 3% were overseas people who've never been stung.

I live a beautiful place close to a small forest. And I walk past this field with the tree almost every morning when taking kid to daycare.

@craigmaloney sure β that last example was LaTeX based, with Tufte template. But it looks like youβre pretty much set to go with the Nipajin template. And Markus Leupold-LΓΆwenthal of Ludus Leonis was very nice when I met him back in 2011.

@ekaitz_zarraga I don't know. If we're interested in usability testing we should be asking people who are new, not people who have been here for years, that's the only thing I know. π

@Elmkast Found a non-paywalled version of the science paper that is the source for that 70% claim
"Enforcement of laws,
interventions in soy and beef supply chains, restrictions on access to credit, and
expansion of protected areas appear to have contributed to this decline, as did a decline
in the demand for new deforestation"haven't finished it yet but what I've read is very interesting.
