@Graham_Mitchell I didn't know that they also work with ordinary phone service! I don't have a phone line so didn't realise. I have two VoIP accounts on it - home and business - so that I can silence the business line when it gets too late in the evening.

I wonder if the person at the Huddersfield Examiner whose job it is to stand at the top of the magistrates' court steps and take candid photos of the unfortunates who end up there feels like they're making a positive contribution to the world?

@asovereignscot It seems like a lot of the pro-Union Scots who voted "No" in the independence referendum were voting for a future as part of the United Kingdom *in* the European Union, and the trading power that brings. A lot of the "No" campaign scare stories were around Scotland no longer being an EU member if independence happened.
They didn't vote to be part of an isolated and struggling UK closing in on itself and therefore the referendum should be re-run under current conditions.

My local newspaper is today running a story moaning about: "Cuck-flakes".
Their grasp of the English language is getting more tenuous by the week.

@artsyhonker Universal Basic Income, we should already have it but we don't, because it's more beneficial for them to have us all sitting in call centres or financial service centres, clicking buttons that are soon to be automated, having ideas we can't do anything about because we're too knackered when we get home to be activists, thinkers, humans.

@dajbelshaw Mine was Β£50 and it's really good! I'm not at home so can't remember the model number, but the brand is Gigaset. It has a Web based admin panel for setup but otherwise works just like an ordinary cordless phone.

@Graham_Mitchell @dajbelshaw At my parents' house (where there's decent FTTC coverage) they use an ISP called Uno based in Sheffield, who are much cheaper than AAISP but they are a corporate member of ORG and don't do any blocking/censoring as far as I can tell.

@dajbelshaw @Graham_Mitchell I use Virgin, because there's no FTTC where I live and they're the only high-speed broadband option. I also work from home and can't work with unreliable and slow ADSL.
I take just a broadband line from them - no TV or phone service - and for a "landline" I use a VoIP phone handset with a local area code number. For TV I just have FreeSat. It works out at Β£32 a month for 100Mbps, and the phone "line" is almost free - calls 0.1p a minute or something.

@hollyamory I tend not to go to Prides because I'm not keen on crowded places - I get very little out of attending because I'm always looking for an escape from the crowd, but the crowd is why people go!
Perhaps it is just me, but I struggle to see the point of Pride events these days. Then again, as very much a closeted trans person I have never really felt like part of any kind of queer community.

@hollyamory Probably better than Manchester Pride. Last time I looked, they closed off the "Village" (do they still call it that?) and charged everyone Β£20 to get onto public streets.
And it's all sponsored by banks, airlines etc.

Back in my home town, listening to a radio station that was part of my early career.
"Proud to be your local radio station since 2009!" goes the new jingle on the "new look" radio station.
Christ, has it been that long? I remember being in the studio on launch day with a glass of fizzy orange. Way to make me feel old and decrepit.

@cbowdon It's less metaphorical than that. A large part of the NHS finance system is run on an ancient Java app written in Oracle Forms in the early 2000s.

@Graham_Mitchell @dajbelshaw I'm not Doug, but the Phone Co-Op does very little technical work itself. If you buy the Phone Co-Op, you're buying a TalkTalk service for more money - they literally just resell TalkTalk, an ISP of questionable quality.
AAISP on the other hand is expensive (too expensive for me) but they are independent and mostly run their own infrastructure, with highly technically competent support staff and a strong no-censorship stance.

@thamesynne I will be gone before it gets here, I have to go to stupid Cheshire tonight, which never has any weather other than damp, clammy and still.
I always miss lying in bed listening to the wind and rain and storms.
