@thamesynne I know the BBC local radio weather forecasts are pre-rec, I wonder if they're just playing out the same one every day.

@thamesynne The radio has been warning us of impending thunderstorms for the past few days and we haven't had one. They're always supposed to be "this evening" each day.

@porsupah Not giving children the choice to have an education in the subjects they want seems to go against the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the UK has signed up to.

This country is a crap place to be a child, as seen by the recent stats on child mental health. Parents shout at and hit their kids much more than elsewhere, there's a lot more pressure in education and society, it's just generally not a place I'd want to grow up.

@porsupah It's happening already - "academies" and "free schools" are far more free to teach whatever drivel they want rather than sticking to the national curriculum.

The government want to allow more religious schools in the near future which will not have to teach things like sex education, evolution etc.

There's already a religious school close to me, where the kids aren't allowed to socialise with those who aren't of their faith, or watch British TV etc. "Freedom of choice for parents."

@Jo @porsupah They don't any more, though. My hometown is overrun with them - they're on the council, the MP is one, you can't get anything done without the approval of this church.

This has happened in the open, people just accept that the town is now run by the kind of people who'd run people out of town for having an abortion.

@porsupah It has been going on for a while now. Evangelicals are worming their way into public life in a lot more different ways now.

It's concerning for those of us who believe people should be free to live their lives without criticism from loonies who think the end times are coming.

Seriously, why do they let these people on the BBC? He sounds unhinged, going on about the end times. Get in the sea.

On the radio, some bloke from a local church: "Tonight's BLOOD MOON is a sign from God that judgement is coming on the earth. The end of life as we know it is coming."

BBC Radio Sheffield usually has a higher calibre of guest.

There is someone on the radio extolling the slimming virtues of gin. She also happens to run a company selling gin.

@dajbelshaw It's best not to mix packages and repositories from different distributions, even when they're all "Debian-based" or "Ubuntu-based", it causes problems and stress down the line.

@saper @dajbelshaw @Antanicus No idea, I use Debian stable and do a fresh install when a new version comes out (after testing it on a non-production system first). I don't do a lot of installing.

@vfrmedia @medusa Part of the problem with Corbyn is that he's been knocking around since the 70s and has consequently talked an awful lot of bollocks, including stuff that might have looked radical and right-on in the 70s but looks horrendous now.

There's so much that can be used to hit him around the head. Look at the IRA links, for instance. I don't know where the young, left-wing leaders without the 20th century baggage are - I'd vote for them, but I have reservations about Corbyn.

@dajbelshaw Your browser profile. I know most of the major browsers have a sync feature nowadays, but it's so much easier (and more secure) to just back up your ~/.mozilla (or whatever browser) folder to an external drive and copy it back after the reinstall.

@a_breakin_glass Also Geoff is a radio legend, he's been on air since 1991 and a lot of those years he's been on major national stations, I am not sure he needs any radio advice
