TIL no one sells newspapers anymore. I wanted to buy one for once, so I went into three "convenience stores" locally - no papers.

Those dingy little shops seem to exist only to sell white cider to alcoholics and single fags to kids these days. Why are they still in business?

When I was in radio, it was more a case of "do a bit of reading about the guest beforehand, wing it, and if all else fails stick Rick Astley on". EIGHTEEN PAGES!

@dajbelshaw On a similar tack, I quite like this one. It's a game that sends you to a random point on street view and you've to guess where you are. https://geoguessr.com/

Sadly, street view blots out a lot of road and street signs thinking they're number plates, which makes it needlessly hard to guess from language etc.

Stumbled across this while looking for something else - a 1998 DUP leaflet urging people to vote "no" to the Good Friday Agreement. It's worth remembering with the current Brexit deliberations around the Irish border that these people are now propping up the UK government.

β€˜ITS RIGHT TO SAY NO’ – Democratic Unionist Party – No to the Good FridayΒ Agreement
By irishelectionliterature from Irish Election Literature

From the 1998 Good Friday Agreement campaign a DUP (or Ulster Democratic Unionist Party as the good DoctorΒ refers toΒ them inΒ his message) leaflet urging voters to vote No to the Agreement.
β€˜The Pan Nationalist Front wants a β€˜Yes’ voteΒ to wreck the Union.’

Worthwhile reading all the objections and then seeing how much progress has been made in the last 12 years.
Ian Paisley concludes his β€˜Dear Friend and Voter’ message with..
β€œThe Agreement is a staging post to a united Ireland and has come about by abject surrender to IRA/Sinn Fein.
A β€œYes” vote is a vote which the enemies of our Province and those who have surrendered to them are calling for.
You have the opportunity to save Ulster for the Union and for your offspring by voting β€œNo”.
β€’ A β€œNo” vote means a positive and decisive blow struck at the heart of Ulster’s enemies.
β€’ A β€œNo” vote will block the slide to increased and eventual total Dublin rule.
β€’ A β€œNo” vote will save the RUC from destruction.
β€’ A β€œNo” vote will keep Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness out of any future government of Northern Ireland, and
β€’ A β€œNo” vote will demonstrate the determination of the Ulster people not to be bombed into Dublin rule by terrorist gangsters.
Stand up for Ulster! Stand up for your children and your heritage! Stand up for your children and your children’s children! Let the world know that the Ulster people will not be bullied, bribed or butchered into accepting fascist rule. It is suicidal to do otherwise. Your Friend and European Member of Parliament. For God and Ulster …”

@Damage There's one in the street I walk down every day to take my online sales to the post office. (I know I could find a more efficient way, but I like the exercise.)

It's gross. Literally everyone you see crosses the street so they don't have to walk within a metre of the thing. I wish someone would take it away, and the fridge that's also been there for six months.

@zigg Thank you for the reminder! I've been building a new website lately and I've tried to be careful to add descriptive alt text wherever I use an image. If I have text in an image, I put it in the alt text.

It's extra work, but if it makes the website a friendlier place to spend time for one person, it seems worth it to me.

Quiet rainy day, so spent a bunch of time today cleaning up a super gross Eton E1 radio that had been a victim of several shitty damp UK houses over the years.

    Turns out it's a thing: https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=opera&q=sticky+eton+e1&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

@tomharris I think the headline writers still think they're working on Ceefax sometimes. A lot of the time BBC News headlines are a case of "words these rearrange sentence into meaningful a".

@davidbenque Thanks! It's a bit short-notice to make it to London from England's northern hinterlands - a London trip is quite cheap when you can book it in advance, but not when it's the same week. Are there places you can find out about this kind of thing before it happens?

@davidbenque This looks absolutely fascinating! I wish I was going. I've wandered around the City of London thinking about this stuff myself in the past.

But often it feels like ordinary Brits don't hear about this stuff until it's too late to participate. How do you find out that this sort of super-interesting thing is happening in time to be able to actually get involved?
