@Naxjns I use Pidgin but it's not updated often these days, and it's a program that connects to other services rather than a service in itself. I also use Telegram, but that's more for convenience than the fact that I believe in the tech behind it.
@paregorios I've recently switched to Mythic Beasts hosting from my own VPS (can't be arsed to maintain it anymore when I have a small business to run) and they tick all your boxes at a reasonable price. They seem to have a clue, too.
@Naxjns@MRensema I don't have Facebook or Twitter, but I do have a Google account and the main interaction I have with their creepiness is when my phone asks me about a place I've been to recently.
"Let people visiting Lidl know what to expect," it says. It's a Lidl, for goodness sake, what do people think they're going to get? Cabaret acts? Philosophy discussion groups?
@mkb@Damage That's something that bothers me too - they're legging it back towards the Alpha Quadrant at warp speed, they've been at it for months, and still they keep running into the Kazon. You'd think they'd be out of their territory after so many months.
@Damage@mkb She also has a name that sounds like a street in a new town somewhere in the Midlands. I can almost hear my sat nav saying "Turn left onto Janeway".
@Damage@mkb On the subject of Star Trek, I started watching Voyager for the first time recently and ended up sort of knocking it on the head mid-way through series 2.
Every episode seems to be the same format - meet mystery alien, alien tries to kill them, nearly destroys Voyager, a bit of technobabble, the day is saved. I miss the politics and ongoing storylines of DS9.
If they save the ship by remodulating the cylinder head gasket and rerouting the flange one more time...
@vfrmedia@tomas I've always wanted to visit East Anglia, where I live is probably the most hilly place in the country and I love the idea of all the open space and big skies :)
@vfrmedia@tomas I used to live in Cheshire and a few of the local repeaters there (which were actually based around Stoke-on-Trent) got closed down because of non-stop abuse. I think GB3VT is back now, but it got quite nasty for a while, death threats and such. There's no place for it in a technical hobby.
@tomas Most of what you get on the local repeater here these days is swearing or people keying up over each other. So much drama, so little technical experimentation.
