    @natecull @scolobb Garbage collection for Actors, especially for remote objects, is quite tricky.

    @clacke @natecull Technically, the term "actor model" [0] refers to a quite abstract model (some abstract actors sending around some abstract messages, and also creating new actors). In this sense, it is not less abstract than pure functional programming.

    In general, defining whether something is more abstract than something else is quite difficult and usually requires setting up an abstract basis, which is, again, an abstraction.

    For Reasons I am still on NixOS 16.09, and the GNOME3 there has the useless keyring that can't handle ed25519.[0]

    Here's the solution.

    /etc/nixos/configuration.nix:

    programs.ssh.startAgent = true;

    ~/.bash_profile:

    if [ -v XDG_RUNTIME_DIR ]; then
    [ -e $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/ssh-agent ] && export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/ssh-agent
    fi

    Or, you know, just skip that if, if you like, and just assume XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is going to be set, because it is.

    That's it. No more "Could not add identity .../id_ed25519: communication with agent failed".

    [0] Ubuntu 18.04 finally solved it! I haven't looked if they fixed gnome-keyring, or if they worked around it by using another agent for ssh keys. But it's always nice to see something resolved after it being in the issue tracker for the larger part of a decade.

    @markov Don't give them trucks.

    Seriously though, I haven't seen anyone encourage anyone to think the world owes them anything and that they shouldn't look to improving themselves as a way to meet more people.

    Rather, the Fediverse attitude is pretty much that yeah, people are often lonely and that sucks, but you gotta get out there, get fit and take care of yourself if you want encounters in meatspace. Or if you don't have the spoons to do it, you can just hang here, talk about making social network software and 3D print electronic box housings and get blobhugs.

    I think the Fediverse is more of a base to stand on than enabling anything.

    @natecull @scolobb Yeah, Actors and CSP are more of a protocol than an abstraction, so there is less lying going on. But I don't know their academic shape and whether it accounts for e.g. lost messages and dead processes.

    @xj @moonman @gaditb It's not like the NSA has directional listening antennas in my local shopping mall. If they do listen to the whole world, it's in the ISP NOCs. Why is going through my wireless ISP any worse than going through my wired ISP?

    • ☭⚑ Comrade Angles ⚑☭

    @Angle Personally I'm impressed with the VAT-like proposal the Repubs were pushing 2 years ago. It's stalled because "too complicated" (probably a fair judgement). Key problem with US IMO is not having any protections against getting dumped on by artificially cheap goods from sweatshop economies.

    Not ready to make 10 year predictions but indeed stars aren't aligned for UBI right now.

    @moonman seriously. #p2p is a lot worse. right now, you can opt-out of being tracked by using services that you host yourself or that you trust not to track you. the way p2p world is currecntly shaping up, everything you do is a matter of public record.

    a lot of people in the "redecentralize" movement are super into transparency to avoid having their brand sullied by pirates. "you can't hide anything so only legit data is going to be transmitted over our network", they say. a valid point i suppose, but that sentiment strongly echoes "you don't need privacy if you have nothing to hide".

    of course, strong privacy will enable piracy. there is nothing we can do about that because you can't have selective privacy. the question is, what do we really care about? do we care about users, privacy, and freedom or getting patted on the head by the powers that be?
