Indeed, this is very much needed (for every kind of FOSS that can be self-hosted).
I tried doing a bit of that with https://cloudvault.me a while ago (giving full admin control, but also helping with setup and tech support, with the labour decoupled from infrastructure costs).
Also hoped to do this more collectively as part of social.coop, and then through discussions with webarchitects.coop
Keen to see and potentially participate in a new initiative...
Found a Stack Overflow question that matched my problem with no answer. Figured it out on my own, started to write an answer, but stopped, because SO has been unwelcoming to me before. We all lose out on knowledge when you make some people feel unwelcome.
"The true system, the real system, is our present construction of systematic thought itself, rationality itself... if a factory is torn down but the rationality which produced it is left standing, then that rationality will simply produce another factory." - Robert Pirsig (2/2)
Create assistants for and with living communities. Community-oriented design and development. Better yet, design for justice with living communities. Better yet (and I don't know how to do this yet) community-participatory design and development.
It's very painful to see how #SocialCoop has turned out, and how we have let people down.
I've lost hope that this group's overall makeup and values are suited to fostering a healthy community. I am leaving the instance and other discussion groups, and asking that the tech team migrate the instance off of the servers I was providing (before end of Sept).
The dynamics when a member of an oppressed group complains in general about their relative oppressor group are very different than when a member of an oppressor group complains in general about an oppressed group.
E.g. ain't no such thing as reverse racism. The dynamics and meaning are totally different.
This often makes CIS white males (like me) very uncomfortable.
We inherit a lot of evil. Need to end the evil, not feel guilty about it, though.
@logan It could be the server, or how the server is configured/optimized. But in general, Mastodon is a Ruby on Rails app, which isn't the most efficient...
There's a lot of customer culture attitude in Mastodon-the-community, where people treat Gargron and other devs, the instance admins, moderators, etc. like service workers. It's a spoiled, entitled attitude, where "the customer is always right" and it's okay to be abusive or demeaning to people providing a service when they don't give you what you want.
The fediverse isn't a corporate model. When you're rude or demeaning to someone here, you're being abusive to volunteers building a playground
I wonder if #ActivityPub could be used to federate BeWelcome with other platforms for non-commercial hospitality-sharing (unlike AirBnB and BookABatch which are commercial)? I'm not sure how many there are, or how compatible their goals and systems are, but I know there is also HospitalityClub.org, HelpX.net, WarmShowers.org, Workaway.info and the various WWOOF schemes.
@redoak yeah I've seen many people asking for this (and would like it myself). Looks like the Mastodon API can now support it but we're missing UI integration
