i like mastodon because it's more about the social aspect and has far less to do with keeping up on big personalities and i hope it stays that way.

It's for following other instances. Click on the "+" icon to add an instance. The helper will suggest instances that match your research and which are up.
Then you will be able to follow local toots of other instances. You can interact with these toots and accounts thanks to cross-account actions.
