"The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation will set standards for the use and ethics of AI and data. This will allow the UK to lead the world in developing practical uses for the technology."

So maybe I should apply to become an AI data ethicist in the newly established quango. What do you think my chances of getting in would be?

    0% ?

    -200% ?

@morganastra @claire primitivism is probably ok for some people. At times the idea of abandoning most technology and going to live on a remote Scottish island is tempting. The main point is that humans as a whole couldn't return to a paleolithic lifestyle. The environment which supported hunter gatherers is largely gone, and there are just too many people for that to be viable. Like it or not, we can only find a way forward with technology and agriculture.

    @rowan Arguments against:

    1. It's utterly wasteful and is designed to literally ANTI-scale.

    2. It's not decentralised, three guys in China end up running everything

    3. It's not private, everything everyone does anywhere is logged forever. Anyone can run analytics on that data and find all sorts of exciting matches.

    4. The log becomes HUGE, see #3 and #1.

    Arguments for:

    1. It's trendy.

EVERYONE, A WORD IF YOU PLEASE:

Thanksgiving is upon us. Many of you are looking upon the day with dread, I know. Please know: you are not alone. You are not the only person who feels alienated when they're around family. You're not the only one who is dealing with judgmental, bigoted, prejudiced relatives.

That is not to attempt to lessen your struggles; they are valid! But you're not alone! You have a whole support network here. Be strong and pull through!

maybe someday videogame critique will move on from sex workers can't be in this game, and toward: sex workers aren't a tool for you to rep how 'gritty' your game is

Maybe we should call them "entrypoints" or hubs or gateways or something.

"instance" makes sense to those of us who are devops or devops-adjacent but that's about it.

Thanks to you all for fitting pump.io into the larger history of the fediverse with this discussion.

Having kept an eye on it over time still didn't afford me some of the context provided by your exchange.

Just a usage aside, I don't mean to derail (I've found the history of Wire vis-a-vis that of Signal and LibreSignal and Matrix, for instance very relevant to my interests) but ...

I find the verbing of "open source" particulatly awkward given that the simple past tense verb form "freed" is both shorter and much more closely associated with liberation than its adjective form "free".

    Funny, that.

I don't even remember where and when and how, but I've encountered the notion that a thing is wrong because it is illegal, rather than the other way round. Frightens me for how deeply that misunderstands political & governmental essentials.

I'm increasingly distressed by the tendency towards engineering into Mastodon methods of controlling accounts, fairly transparently as a mechanism of trying to control the people behind the accounts.

The beauty of federation to me is in the ways it *empowers* people to make the choices that are right for them. While those choices can include ways of punishing, shaming, ostracizing and excluding others, it's a shame to prioritize and focus on those.

@Elizafox a decentralized patreon would be like a cryptocurrency designed by people who weren't obsessed with making sure buying coffee for a friend could be done anonymously and deniably and untraceably. And who, you know, had friends. And who drank coffee, instead of engineered flesh robot chow.

I can also really recommend #trustroots (https://www.trustroots.org), an alternative to #couchsurfing. I found a host in Trieste who was willing to #share his place and also in Padua I found a nice person to stay with. Then, yesterday, when I was about to put on my shirt a dead lizard fell on the ground. I guess the #cat wanted to win my affection and put it into my open bag.(I assume it was the cat, otherwise I take the trustroots recommendation back.) #sharing #lizardcontent #donthasselthehoff

Hi all you in the #fediverse
    I'm actually not @trustroots but @paulfree14

I just love the idea of #trustroots

It's a +28.000 members large traveler community sharing free accommodation and connecting nice people via an #opensource nonprofit plattform

I really want them to join us here

    They have different "tribes"

    Some are:
    #LGBTQ*
    #nomads
    #hitchhikers
    #hackers
    #punks
    #sailors

I made a bet to motivate them

"The first toot will get more interactions/boosts then your fb grab"

I asked them to leave fb/t and join us. But they were like no one is using #mastodon

Can you help to proof them wrong?
    #libremonday
We could get a fediverse tribe, if we do 😜

Why are there like a million different copies of the exact same books over on #ArchiveOrg? Like 6 versions of "The moral instruction of children" and 5 "Marriage and divorce" etc on this list of books by Felix Adler https://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Adler%2C+Felix%2C+1851-1933%22
