    @strypey I heartily suggest rdiff-backup. Al lthe convenience of rsync combined with diff'ed backups. Super simple, and when you have to recover, so much more precise that an rsync dump.

    Here's my tutorial about it. Pretty quick read.

    @archer72 I suggested pushing HEAD because not all "main" branches are called master but HEAD is always HEAD. I ran into that with a few repos when I was transferring stuff; one repo's main branch would be called development, or trunk, or something unexpected, so pushing HEAD was more generic and safer.

    I know it's a dangerous nit-picky audit trail to start down, but I hate it when I find out that a #charity I donate to spends money on #proprietary software. It makes me want to stop donating, because I know there's a huge amount of money being wasted on something that can and should be $0. Like, without question, $0, if not supportive of #opensource.

    (And yes, I know sometimes charitable orgs get $0 proprietary software, but rarely is it $0 across the board.)

    What does that say about the society that created TLJ vs the originals. It's almost like we modern folk can't even conceive something that is not structured by militaristic authority, even in our fiction.

    Took a while to get it all sorted, but 94% of my repos are now gone from Github. I'm using this script:
    https://notabug.org/notklaatu/sync-up
    to mirror some stuff only found on Github with other remotes. Working out pretty well so far.

    If you're looking for a nice self-hosted but multi-user git instance, take a look at Gitolite. It makes backend admin of your repositories, and adding users, authenticated by SSH keys, easy.

    If Microsoft truly loves open source, they'd open source #github upon acquisition.

    Solidarity. Forgetting the firewall step is something you do reliably, every single time, for at least a year. I think it takes about 17 times, then it finally sinks in and you Never Forget Again.

    @theru Yeah, all I typed was:

    $ curl icanhazip.com

    and it responds with my public IPv4 addr. I just now tested both Fedora 27 and Slackware 14.2

    Maybe it's something I configured on my home router or something.

    @h4ck3r9 If you're cheap like me and this isn't a vital service, you can go to freenom.com to get a $0 domain.

    @h4ck3r9 Not sure how much you know and don't know, so ignore me if I'm being pedantic.

    You need a public IP address that points to your web server, and you may need to poke a hole in your firewall.

    0. Log in to the computer serving your web site and type:

    $ curl icanhazip.com

    This shows your public IP addr.

    1. Obtain a domain name and point it to that IP addr.

    2. Open port 80 in your server's firewall, and possible forward port 80 from your router to the internal IP of your web server.

    Remember when we trusted software? When people said things like "don't install things from that site, they're probably viruses" and "I won't use software from them anymore, they put in ads and broke my trust."
    Now it's all "install this app, it's absolutely spyware and adware and was written by some techbro in a basement motivated by nothing but quick money, but your phone's sandboxing should protect you from having your phone taken over or personal information stolen"

    I've got a new paper with Sayamindu Dasgupta that analyzes a natural experiment in Scratch and shows how "wide walls" can support engagement and learning. https://mako.cc/copyrighteous/wide-walls-natural-experiment

    I'll press the issue because I know you can take it - I'm going to argue that Gentoo's docs don't provide the amount of task-specific instruction or theory that my Slackermedia docs do.

    Although... I guess somebody could build gentoo and then use my slackermedia docs for learning the tools and workflow.

    I guess we're both winners this time. Darn, I was so sure I had the upper-hand.
