There are ideas that an educated person in the West don't even dare to question, because they're ethical stances. Axioms upon which every other political idea rests. Axioms of human rights, the nation state, rule of law, race/gender equality, religious/political freedom and democracy. These ideas are fragile and easily subverted, because they are not universal or natural, no matter how badly we want them to be. They aren't truly superior. We just like our own ideas.

I don't think you can really understand what culture is unless you've been in a cult. My former workplace was a mix of two cults: That of Silicon Valley and that of Bitcoin. It just occurred to me that every culture is also a cult. If working somewhere can skew one's thinking, imagine what growing up and living in a culture does to you? Imagine being rescued from Earth by space aliens, and they begin to explain to you how mad Earth's culture actually is, and you have an epiphany?

Today was weird. Woke up this morning, felt like a train wreck, called in sick, took a phone call, then slept for another 7 hours before I woke up and made dinner. Does anyone else just randomly need a day off to sleep? I went for 28 days without a hitch, so this wasn't expected. https://snabeltann.no/media/azHWNPFp9wzf7fHZ4Dg

@JubalBarca Norway has a different relationship to Russia than most. Russia never invaded us or threatened us. They did chase the Nazis out of Northern Norway without taking any territory, however. Norway and Russia have a trade relationship going back hundreds of years. For Norway, it's like dancing with two partners at once, because we are also a NATO member. We see the Russians as mostly friendly to us, but a threat to many others.

@JubalBarca We already have a right wing coalition government in Norway, consisting of the Conservative Party (establishment), the Christian Democratic Party (establishment) and the Progress Party (populists), with a conservative prime minister who mostly remains aloof while the Progress Party says controversial things. Her strategy seems to be to remain tight-lippedly above it all. She leads in the back room, not out in the open.

@JubalBarca Social media is more powerful than traditional media. I think their influence was significant. I think they're trying to divide NATO with Trump, and the EU with Brexit.

So, the Kremlin might've been involved in creating both President Trump and the Brexit by manipulating social media. If there's any truth to these rumors, a new cold war has started.

Bitcoin is basically the tulip-mania of the early 21st century. It's barely being used as a currency and the cancellation of Segwit2x says a lot about what the community wants from Bitcoin: Everything but a viable currency. I think it's safe to say now that Bitcoins only have value because people are speculating on the value of Bitcoins.

If you let grain or potatoes rot for a while, it gets poisonous. If you add this poison to a drink, it's going to make it a bit nasty. We call this a cocktail. If you put the poison in a charred barrel for a while, it will taste even worse. We call this whisky. If you let molasses rot and put that in a barrel, you get a god-awful liquid called rum. If you let grapes go bad, you get a sour and bitter concoction called wine. We drink these things because the poison makes us happy and giddy.

For some weird reason, every sound in the Japanese language is also a sound in the Norwegian language. If you read romaji with Norwegian pronunciation, it will more or less sound like correctly pronounced Japanese.

The errors would mostly be things like mute U's not being mute, and vowel clusters turning into diphthongs.

Japanese always struck me as almost Indo-European in its phonetics, if not in its vocabulary, when compared to something like Mandarin or Tagalog.

    • Elly, nasty enby :heart_pan:

@Elizafox Because you used to have to input phone numbers by hooking your finger on a hole on a spring loaded dial, pulling that hole to the correct digit, and then letting go. It's why it's called "dialling a number". It didn't make a tone. Instead, it sent pulses down the phone line. Merely having to touch keys and hearing a tone was a new thing, so they had to give it a name.

@clacke As per today, it's like this: School students really hate having Nynorsk on the curriculum because it sounds ridiculous and is hard to master for someone who doesn't speak a dialect that's close to it. Students in East Norway will often accidentally write Swedish words on their Nynorsk assignments because they're so lousy at it. Many young people want it to go away and never come back.

@djsundog Slowly wandering into Weird Al territory... An awful lot of 80s songs are ragtime numbers in disguise. Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder, for example. There was a ragtime craze in the late 70s and it stuck into pop music. Rap is also ragtime in disguise, at least when the good ones do it. The syncopated off-beat rhythms they speak in are exactly the same as when a ragtime player jazzes up his right hand.

I sped up Carless Whisper to 115 BPM and added some punchier drums. I think this proves that it's a disco song in disguise: http://thj.no/public/thor_careless_whisper_115_bpm_remix.mp3
