    @natejms In the US, this is strongly tied to social justice and racial oppression. A lot of folks serving long sentences in US prisons are non-violent drug offenders who used or possessed marijuana.

    I'm not sure if it was ever quite the same bludgeon of power in Canada.

    With the recent decriminalization of marijuana in Canada, I've found the reactions of Canadians super interesting.

    I grew up during the War on Drugs. I knew folks who smoked, and how the official line was bullshit. As I got older, I learned about the prohibition's origin in racism, its role in oppression, and its safety, especially compared to legal drugs. Legalization undoes a world of evil.

    Most folks I speak to still view it as an icky illegal drug, just like any other.
