@ChrisWere That makes sense. I usually lean towards using Gnome software under Mate, rather than KDE based software, but that's probably superficial, because it fits better into the look of the Mate desktop. I use other KDE apps and they work just fine. I feel like Linux software in general is getting more stable and polished and runs well on most desktops. Might have to test out Kontact too, just for comparison.

C.Cameron (cameron@linuxrocks.online)'s status on Sunday, 02-Sep-2018 00:45:46 EDT C.Cameron Last week I got pretty burned out on social media and its dramatics, and the weird jacked up feeling it gives my nervous system. It's not Mastodon specifically, which is still the best social media, but social media as a whole, and the tendency to fall into a "scroll-hole" to see what's next.
So I'm pulling back a bit, to give my noggin time to be and relax. Trying to read more books and chill out by candle light with a cup o' tea or a glass o' vino a little more often.

tarot bird (morganmay@octodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Aug-2018 20:17:13 EDT tarot bird When we create a culture where it's okay to gang up on and harass people, the ones who suffer most are never the ones who "deserve it", because those people inevitably have backup/clout/resources. The people who suffer most will be vulnerable and marginalized people who are wrongly accused of misbehavior and don't have a fanbase or clique to back them up. Mob behavior is *easy to exploit*, and we should be very careful about normalizing it.

C.Cameron (cameron@linuxrocks.online)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Aug-2018 19:27:28 EDT C.Cameron Agreed. An open platform has to be the answer, even if there are serious growing pains. Wil is the highest profile person I know of on Mastodon, so it's a whole new can of worms for admins to navigate. But what are we going to do, go back to birdsite? I've never had any sort of community over there.

The strength of the fediverse is supposed to be that if one instance is badly run, you can join another, or roll your own. I'm so sorry that some people are such jerks and that this has happened. I think this is a shake up for Mastodon, I hope it will learn to manage this stuff so it can be a good place for all the humans. This all just makes me sad. -
C.Cameron (cameron@linuxrocks.online)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Aug-2018 18:58:53 EDT C.Cameron @ChrisWere The strength of Mastodon and federation as a whole is supposed to be that when one instance is poorly managed you can use a different instance, or roll your own. This really bums me out, because I only see Wilw trying to be a decent guy, and I hate for one bad admin to ruin that experience for him, and then by association for other people. If my favorite mastodon-ers, such as yourself leave, we just all lose out.
I don't know the solution, but that would be so sad.

I have to be able to scroll through tons of photos all at a glance to find the right one for the web site, or to apply to an art show, so it has never worked for me.

Absolutely, me too. I assign them to specific notebooks that have a pen loop, so I don't lose them, since I always lost pens before. -

Got the little syringes to refill the ink cartridges with colors I like. I also have a simple dip pen and love using that too. Something calming and grounding about writing in an actual notebook. I used to do most of my notes and journals digitally, but have gradually gone more back to real books and use a fountain pen for everything.

Lars Wirzenius (liw@social.nasqueron.org)'s status on Friday, 24-Aug-2018 11:13:32 EDT Lars Wirzenius True software freedom for this age: you can get the source code of a service you use, and can set it up on your own server. You can also get all your data from the service, and migrate it to another service (hosted by you or someone else). Futher, all of this needs to be easy, fast, and cheap enough to be feasible, and there can't be "network effects" that lock you into a specific service instance.

I liked Lemmings when I was 17 or something, and Age of Wonders is a turn based strategy game from 2003. That's about all of my gaming experience. My dude tries to teach me, but I fail. :)

I don't even know what he'd consider important. Right now it's Ultima Online, but I don't even think that's a steam game. HexDSL referenced a spreadsheet for seeing what works and what doesn't. Maybe we'll test on my machine and see what happens.Real question is can I play Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic? The only game I've loved since Lemmings.

I try to pay cash especially for small businesses for that reason alone, but I agree about all the privacy stuff too.
