What reminded me of all of this was a link to a thread on a motorcycle forum, in which the OP, in an attempt to make their engine run more smoothly, dumped two bottles of an octane booster into their fuel tank (which wouldn't fix that problem, and would've been nearly 10 times the appropriate dose anyway).

...except it wasn't octane booster. It was an energy drink (which had the same brand name as the octane booster).

The "entire internet" proceeded to pile onto this guy.

Something I encountered from a bygone era of forum culture: the idea of an "epic thread".

I feel like it's something that died somehow in modern social media culture, with how screenshots from other communities are shared, rather than links directly to the original discussion, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

The correct name for these is "denial minivans", not "sport utility vehicles" or "crossovers".

@Elizafox @dr1ft Myself, I want to see a renaissance of old-school web as document platform, not as application platform, with the features that make an application *possible* removed.

The trick is that we need protocols for all the kinds of shit we currently run on top of the web that are easy to implement clients for, and then actually implement those clients for all sorts of platforms. (How many platforms have native IRC clients, and how many IRC replacements have *ZERO* native clients?)

    Just say no to printers.

@ajroach42 And, "move fast, break things" became a mindset, so people stopped targeting low-end old devices, they focused on the latest and greatest.

*This* is why performance is so shit nowadays.

In 1992, people targeted old low-end hardware.

In 2018, you're lucky if people target something other than the new MacBook Pro that they're developing it on, and their new iPad.

@staticsafe Oh that's right, now I remember - on the same day as they gave me the copy of FS 2000, they took me to an EAA Young Eagles event at KOSU, in which everyone got to fly on their ancient flight simulator, take a tour of the tower, and then go for a ride around northern Central Ohio in someone's plane - in my case, a Piper Arrow III. (I don't remember the tail number.)

Yeah, aviation was something that was *REALLY* interesting to me, even back then...

@staticsafe And for me, while I had some SNES and GBC games before that, as far as computers... it was "go fish in the 18 cubic foot box of pirated Apple II disks", or shareware disks that my parents had bought (yes, paying for SHAREWARE, not even full versions) for the IBM PS/1...

...until a copy of Flight SImulator 2000.

(Mind you, I had already pirated a copy of FS 4.0 myself and flew it *ALL THE TIME*. They knew I'd be interested at least.)

@staticsafe It annoys me that FSX's ATC was kinda glitchy and would get really confused at times, and X-Plane hasn't bothered to model ATC nearly as well. (Maybe Prepar3D is better? I haven't tried that.)

Then again, I think the people that are *REALLY* serious about ATC simulation... just do it themselves. As in, someone will park themselves in a tower in multiplayer, and just... be air traffic control for everyone else.

@bobjonkman Could be the other one, you usually only do the one that's actually failed. It does sound like a wheel bearing from how you describe it though.

Of course, does it get louder when you turn a CERTAIN direction, or either direction?

@bobjonkman So for the engine cutting out, I'd start with a scan for fault codes (in a pinch, most auto parts stores will scan it for free). 2300 RPM consistently makes me wonder if it's a problem with a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor, or something along those lines.

For the rubbing noise... constant or pulsing? (That said, I'm inclined to say front wheel bearing.)

Protip for all the newbies to the #Fediverse - use hashtags.

Mastodon is optimized for searching for hashtags, not full text (by default, full text search only works for messages that you sent, favorited, or boosted, and many Mastodon instances don't even have support for that), so people can find your messages more easily if they have topical hashtags.

If American can sacrifice children in service of the Second Amendment, why can't America sacrifice children in service of the First Amendment?

(Not that SESTA/FOSTA would've actually stopped child pornographers, but...)
