@noelle it's neat when a divide-by-zero error tells you something about the nature of the universe.

@noelle I'm naming an NPC that in my D&D game. No kidding, I already know who it is, I just haven't named them yet.

@noelle I wish all languages supported "else if" and then whatever contraction they felt like...

@ster I do think it's unintentional. The rest of the company's description is pretty woke. This is just one job ad author who missed the boat and is scaring away possible candidates, probably by mistake.

@karyl https://www.dev.ngo/join/ - I ID'd them in followups. They're trying, this one listing on the Python job board just isn't that great.

@somarasu It's basically textbook microaggressions that the author of the listing doesn't even mean to include, but which keeps members of underrepresented groups from applying. For the longest time, pronoun choices were the worst offenders, but referring to the candidate as 'he' seems to be on the decline.

@Avalon there are other TTS engines available, both on F-Droid and the Play store. I needed Portuguese, so I ended up having to install the Google TTS engine via Yalp. Lineage ships with Pico, which does have a few config options to be less awful, IIRC.

@literallyfenic @nonphatic My immediate reaction was the same - I'm "five of six", not "one to six".

@ghost ask her for a contract to consult on these issues? Seems unlikely, but you never know...

@garbados It's a bit goofy, but does contrast a couple post-scarcity options in a sort of retro-speculative novella.
So, tentatively, yes?

@taoeffect in 20 years the Unix date rollover will have just happened. We won't be writing shell scripts because nobody will have a working shell...

@garbados have you read "Manna" by Marshall Brain? This reminds me of that.

It took a very long time to get up to a boil, until I replaced those two spacer bricks at the top with some 1" aluminum rail left over from the old greenhouse teardown. So getting the gap at the top just right is pretty vital; too wide and you lose heat to the surroundings, too narrow and the rocket effect doesn't work as well. I suspect that even a 1" gap is more than enough room, though; I'll try even narrow next time.

I feel like a lot of people are seeing "follow recommendations" and freaking out, so two thoughts:
1) There's no magic algorithm present. Follow recommendations are literally "hey, you boost and favorite this person's toots a lot but aren't following them". It /can't/ recommend someone you're not already interacting with.
2) It's part of the server API, not the user interface. If it hadn't been in the patch notes you'd never know it was there.

@noelle It's a bit of hair-splitting, but really the GDPR only regulates certain businesses (above a certain size) behaving in certain ways on the Internet, not the entire Internet.
It doesn't affect much of what you and I do with our own Internet activities, up to and including running services for others.

There's nothing in the 'who-to-follow' API that I can't replicate with a quick-and-dirty Python script that consumes public information.
There's nothing in the 'trending' hashtag API that I can't replicate with a quick-and-dirty Python script that consumes public toots.
There are technological limitations to how much safety you can have when speaking in public. If you really want a perfectly safe forum, you need to find or make a private, invite-only non-federated service.
