Not sure, but isn't the economic benefit center on the idea of having a "full" profile of a person to trade in? Evading links amongst online personas is hard, but *making* those links also has a cost, which I'm sure the data merchants are keen to minimize.

I have unpleasant memories from my time in those UseRealNames battles.
FWIW though I remembered you fondly from that time, no doubt in part from your very constructive approach around CommunityWiki, its license, and mirrored pages. No ill-will at all.
There are other proponents from then I might still grumble about, if pressed, but no need to go there just now.

Families often avoid conflict by not talking about politics and religion at the dinner table. Facebook is like being at the dinner table 24x7, except that it's designed so that you forget your entire family is there. It's also designed to make you angry and get you to talk about politics and religion. In other words, Facebook is designed to provoke conflict in families, which has torn many families apart that might otherwise still be able to tolerate one another.

Got an email from AT&T today with a subject line of "What's better than 1 new iPhone?"
Zero, zero new iPhones.

at a fast casual place for lunch, near location of an earlier errand.
In the short time I've been here, 2 separate times 2 separate customers have knocked over a free standing plastic sign holder, from countertop to floor.
It's just not a good fit.

For the record, folks, the new immigration policy still involves indefinite incarceration for families. This means perpetual incarceration. It is a violation of a legal settlement put into place 20 years ago because incarcerating a child, even with family, creates permanent harm.
There is also still no plan for reuniting families already separated.

A tip for other writers who suffer from THE FEAR: I'm using a timer (Tomighty Timer http://tomighty.org/ -- open-source, obnoxious, can make a tick-tock noise, harder to ignore than web timers) and timing editing sprints in a spreadsheet and it's helping a lot.
Separating my wordcount goals for drafting and editing helped a lot. Shooting for 3k/hour editing keeps away the brain weasels.
I learned this from Chris Fox's "5,000 Words an Hour" (free on his site).

My one direct interaction with Warren, via email, helped me in non-obvious ways, which maybe I can get back to writing about later.

@hfrazey Thanks. It's a hard problem. I fully support stiff-arming trolls and haters *when* they are trolling and hating. And trying not to troll and hate and not to be deliberately damaging, and discouraging people from doing that.
That said, I tip towards talking it out, being expressive, and well ... *being* instead of not being.
I saw a status go by recently about how creativity and criticism are separate processes: That is, writing is different from editing.

Anyway, Warren suffered some sort of mental health breakdown and killed himself 9 years ago come November. I didn't know him in person, but his work changed my life, and very possibly yours, given how widespread it has been used in the biological sciences.
I remember vividly where I was and what I was doing when I learned, some months after the fact, that he'd died. I heard it in a podcast.

I'm going to take another run at this, doing a separate reply to my initial post, tagging it using my best understanding of the convention. A convention, I'll note, that constitutes a jargon which, like all jargons, has the emergent property of excluding those not sufficiently familiar with it, whether due to a lack of caring or a lack of privilege or whatever. It's a question of priorities.

Like, OK, more power to you if you can get people to categorize the world the way you want, to say what you want them to say instead of what they want to say. This is the dreariness of orthodoxies and authoritarianism and enforced rather than emergent convention, to bleach the color out of our interactions, to cover the naughty bits with a fig leaf.

This is what frustrates me about aspects of CW culture: Like, OK, I get that caring for other people is a good thing, but writing is hard enough. This isn't *about* mental health or suicide--those are just a part of the story. Like, the fact that I ate something is just part of some stories. Or, well, anything else, really. The CW convention is a convention that puts the meta discussion foremost.

Yeah, I started with fruit, fruit trees in particular. Then I, uh, branched out into woody plants more generally.
Lately, its a question of whether or not I like how the Latin genus name sounds when I (mis)pronounce it to myself.
