I'd probably use GnuSocial a lot more if there were a decent app for it (iOS). These days I use the computer for computing but for social media I use devices.

A friend has lent me a copy of "What To Do When Machines Do Everything". Written by what appear to be tech bros and aimed at business people, it argues that AI (well, 'machine learning') means we are on the cusp of the fourth Industrial Revolution so get with the program or fall behind. Sets out 'strong AI' (skynet) as the possible dystopian future that people are afraid of but completely fails to mention the mass surveillance and population control uses of ML that are being rolled out today. Recommend 'Automating Inequality' as a balance. We'll meet for a drink this week and compare notes. https://shitposter.club/attachment/2091786 https://shitposter.club/attachment/2091787

Wonderful - my fileserver OS reinstall appears to have renamed all the disk devices under /dev/sd* and I may have just corrupted the partition table of the main (software RAID) disk thinking it was an external drive. Take a backup and rebuild/recover the array s-l-o-w-l-y.

@delores 6502 instruction set is somewhat minimal and an exercise in patience. (Some have called it the original RISC.) I would not start off with 6502 for assembler - 68000 is much better for learning (Amiga) - 32-bit registers and an orthogonal instruction set. As for learning programming, that takes a lifetime to master. Would learning assembler help you to achieve your goals? It might help you understand the bottom level of the stack but not much else, unless you need to write device drivers or something else that needs to talk to the hardware directly.

After cursory investigation there are quite a lot of Google references in the Riot android app. It looks like analytics is not much of a problem, especially if you installed from f-droid. It's either off by default or you can turn it off from settings.

The main Google integration is GCM and that only applies if you installed from Google Play.

So basic opsec with the Riot app is to only install it from f-droid and prefer xmpp when possible.

@bob Agree. Their privacy policy appears to be innocuous enough and they're a German firm. However, private firms exist to make a profit and they could change terms and conditions at any time and leave you up shit creek.

Wonderful. "Upgrade" file server to Fedora 28 (via 27 from 26) and now not only is netatalk no longer supported, automount nfs hangs randomly from my Debian box. Keeps saying "request not completed in time". Despite setting a very long timeout. NFS sucks rocks.

Upgraded fileserver's Fedora OS. Now AFP (netatalk) appears no longer supported. Gee thanks. Switched to NFS. Why are most mainstream network filesystem protocols a pile of dreck? (Yet _another_ reason I still hanker for VAX VMS days.)

Hudson Canyon submarine canyon. During the Ice Age about 10k years ago the sea level was lower and the discharge from the Hudson river helped form the canyon. Now the Hudson is 100mi further west but its discharge still partly flows through the canyon.

Ben Nevis (4,413ft) not the tallest mountain in Britain. Rosemary Bank and Anton Dohrn seamounts stand taller from base to top. Both extinct volcanoes formed 50-60 million years ago as part of the British Tertiary Volcanic Province. https://shitposter.club/attachment/2013322

@moonman Thanks. All public domain data and open source software stack too. There's scads of free data out there you can use to make maps and not just scientific - population, income, house prices, crime figures.
