@kzimmermann You can also export your bookmarks as JSON right from the bookmark manager/library. And the database is SQLite---I've queried and updated it directly a number of times.
With regards to Sync: I wouldn't go so far as to call it SaaSS---it's just syncing data with a remote store, not actually doing any computing. But there are privacy concerns (e.g. Mozilla or law enforcement knowing when you're online based on sync times).
@mala @cwebber There were multiple cameras recording in that room during that event---were any recordings published online? I'd love to share it with others.
The problem is that you're running untrusted code any time you visit some random website. This is hardly the worst thing that can happen to you. Actually, it's probably one of the least (except maybe to your battery life).

Mike GerwitzThe past Friday, I got to speak one-on-one with a lawyer for the company that purchased the company I work for (back in April) about free software, the GPL, and some details on how the web works. It was cool being in the position of educating someone in a legal field (she didn't have much experience with Copyright or software---we're not a software company).
I'm very happy that I'm speaking directly to company lawyers on this, because going through management would strip conversations of all substance. We write some free software, and my intent is to keep it that way, and explain why the GPL (any version) and AGPL are actually the perfect licenses for protecting our company's interests from competitors. There are more conversations to come (and I'm getting them in touch with the FSF), but I hope for the best. Writing free software has helped to keep me at the company for over eight years.
Oh, and the lawyer said she's only been at the company for three weeks. So I'm convinced that dealing with me is part of Legal's hazing process.
My most hated systems: text/plain alternative is raw HTML; text/plain is a link to a (tracker) webpage to render the text/html part; a completely _blank_ text/plain alternative; or there is no text/plain alternative at all.
@awg Oh it'd be great for instruction---I don't have much excuse for hardware hacking (until my son gets a little bit older at least!). And I could re-use a bit of it.
@dthompson And there's a large thread on HN with the OP saying how he wants more license fees to support the project.
It's sad, really, that that perspective isn't applied to free/libre software. If Emacs were proprietary and had a licensing model that totaled hundreds of dollars a year, you know that countless people would be paying.
@dthompson I think I should re-read SICP...it's been ~8yrs and I feel like I've forgotten that most of this stuff was even discussed in there. Surely I'd still get something out of a re-read.
@deadsuperhero Yes, decentralization is the only option that makes sense to me. As Git is intended. As @maiyannah mentioned, GitLab is playing with the idea, though I have not been following it and have no idea what progress has been made. I've seen @cwebber discuss it in the past in a GitLab issue.
