@evilchili dilling one pickle at a time is just profoundly inefficient

@lawremipsum the thing where you can add labeled properties to a profile seems pretty neat.

@HerraBRE @trevdev i guess my main request as a potential user would boil down to: make sure a migration pathway is more than theoretical and routinely tested.
i've learned a lot of wariness about getting my stuff in and out of systems that aren't built around some common, widely-supported format / datastore.

@HerraBRE this is an interesting one - i'm in the middle of some decisions about mail software, and i'm basically ruling out anything that's going to lock me into a storage model i can't port to different software later on (or use with tools like notmuch).
of course i have no idea how to balance my priorities for that against other concerns like "getting all your mail stolen".

@JBM7 i mean, recent hot memes on masto have included oats, bread, jean shorts, and some thing i still don't really understand with a capital letter B emoji, so

@JBM7 i'm trying to decide if there's context for this or if you just hate spatulas

@kensanata i'm on your side about this, but also feel like this might be a counterproductive example inasmuch as preventing another property which risks being as egregious as the _hobbit_ trilogy seems like a benefit to civilization more than it seems like a deprivation.

@DawnPaladin yeah, i think rss bots sort of aren't exactly what i'm looking for anyway, though i guess that leaves me without a super-coherent explanation of what i _am_ looking for.

@seanl @brainblasted i don't think that's a totally unreasonable question - it seems like unicode crossed some important threshold of complexity beyond which there are going to be Problems a while ago - but here we are, i guess.
at least the little pictures can be fun.

@seanl @brainblasted it seems like the answer is probably still "because representation".
unless you're really asking something closer to "why do we have emoji at all". i think once there were a bunch of detailed little color pictures of stuff, there were gonna be pictures of people, and at that point people naturally want pictures that look like _them_.

@ink_slinger yeah, you're better off.
i probably won't get that far with it, but sort of like having actually read ayn rand when i was in college, i expect it to be useful in a bunch of really irritating conversations i'm going to find myself unable to escape.

@dartigen @artsyhonker i remember some from highschool biology / chem classes that had super-skinny stems on 'em that _seem_, in memory, like they'd work, but i couldn't swear to it.

i'm trying to think who's a good kinda free and open-source driven go-to for hosting mail / mailing lists / websites for the kind of small community organization you're trying to do. i bet there are some good answers to this question, but i'm not sure i know what they are. -

as for email that isn't google... well, i hear good things about protonmail:
...they're... _kinda_ open source.
if you can spend 15-20 bucks a month, companies like dreamhost do mailing lists and e-mail fairly easy and it's pretty much all built on open source stuff. or you could pay a bit and host a discussion forum with something like https://www.discourse.org/
