@viciousviscosity i keep a list of recipients - distant family and friends. sometimes i even manage to cycle through most of the list.

usually it's the weather, state of the garden... in the scenario where i get to bum around, definitely postcards from all sorts of middle-of-nowheres.

@earthtopus to be fair, my goal is definitely to establish trade relations here, so.

today's birds include an extremely vocal wren asserting its dominance over the lilac bush and a very cautious crow who (eventually) accepted my offering of black walnuts left on the table in the back yard, after inspecting the situation from approximately 15 angles and making sure i was nowhere within striking distance.

sidebar: i really dialed back conditioner use after some months of doing the baking-soda-and-vinegar thing, now just do it occasionally.

@cstanhope @codesections right. as a first order thing, a distro, like a programming language or a shell, is an environment of tool usage.

beyond that, it's a set of shared norms / expectations, and an ongoing effort in maintenance and integration. fundamentally, it's a thing that people keep doing:

...given that so far i've spent about 27x more effort remembering how to set the default editor than it would have taken me to learn the functional equivalent of ":wq" in joe.

some VMs i've been using lately have /usr/bin/joe set as the default editor, a program which i think i last knew how to use some time well before i could drink in bars, and it has given me a measure of sympathy for all those "i can't spend 15 seconds learning how to quit vi" posts.
