@dankwraith this is indeed a spicy take. i suppose the good news for this view of things is that the end-state of facegoogapplemazon should be strong enough to subsume all human government and begin enforcing its centralized decisions on whatever remnants of organic life are unfortunate enough to still be toiling in the code mines using direct brain implants within a generation or two.

that's an important problem to solve. unfortunately, they're trying to solve it with venture capital money in a rent-seeking silo fashion a la github's engulfing of the code hosting space.

@greg @koenaro yeah, this is perhaps the most "UPHILL BOTH WAYS IN THE SNOW" moment i've had recently, as i just got done pawing through a drawer full of early 90s floppy disk shareware.

@ajroach42 they packaged ship "schematics" and a manual positioned as "claw marks: the onboard magazine of tcs tiger's claw" as copy protection materials (you had to answer questions from the stuff in the box to start the game). cool enough as a gimmick that i could forgive 'em the copy protection.

@ajroach42 @theoutrider @necopinus i remember the day i beat it i got up super early so i could play before the schoolbus came and then i went around all day feeling like i'd woken up from some beautiful dream.

@ajroach42 @theoutrider @necopinus jumping into the middle of this thread to say that wing commander is probably my favorite single-player game experience from that era (or maybe ever). i played the whole thing the first time through with a mouse (possibly a trackball?) on a laptop with nothing but pc speaker and it still blew my mind. i still have my floppies in the original box with the posters of the ships.
