@gameragodzilla
Don't get me wrong, I see your point. I just think...FPS can be changed a lot while still being the same genre as long as it matches that very basic defintion, and that RPG's...are essentially the same.
I'm not saying I -agree- that RPGs should be essentially the same mind you. Just that it is what it is, and I reckon if one knows a genre well enough, it's recognizable.
-
@gameragodzilla
Right, they have conventions, and yet they're still -wildly- different, while still having just enough conventions to be seen as what they are, if you're the type who knows that genre.
Kinda like...another genre...on the tip of my tongue... :p
-
@gameragodzilla
I'm...struggling to read your post in a way that backs up your point, rather than just reinforcing the one I just presented.
I noted that FPS can be just as broad as a genre so your complaint doesn't work well (at least in terms of comparing)
And you...used examples to prove that yeah, FPS can be just as broad. Heretic, Hexen, CoD, Links Crossbow training, Borderlands, all these games are very different while still being "first person shoot stuff."
-
@maiyannah
Very much so. "Well at least it's not..." is just...an odd thing to bring up.
Sure, by the same logic, I'd rather play a lot of stuff than step in dog crap.
But actually, really, I still want something -good- not just "passable because at least I'm not stabbing myself"
-
@maiyannah
Mhm, yet...many would do it, and that confuses me.
-
@gameragodzilla
Only by a certain circle tho, and a lot of the time they're not inherently the type of people you'd expect to actually know.
It really just depends who you listen to.
FPS can be just as broad as RPG. In an RPG you 'play a role' and in an FPS you 'are in first person and have something that shoots'
Links Crossbow training would be considered an FPS by plenty because of the generalized term, and I doubt you'd like that.
-
@maiyannah
On a...tagentially (Probably butched SP?) related note. As someone who has played them, how many typical RPG-like systems does Dark Souls have anyways?
Most people I've seen discuss them, focus purely on the slow methodical combat and...basically nothing else.
-
@gameragodzilla @maiyannah
As noted, just cos they're not my fav first pick genres, doesn't mean I can't get into them.
Don't mistake me disliking Human Rev as "Katie can't stand any Cyberpunk"
I dislike Human Rev cos I thought it was a bad game.
-
@maiyannah
Always comes across as a bad attempt at defense, and that kinda confuses me.
"Least it's better than this other mediocre open world game!"
...o-okay?
-
Cos @maiyannah is wonderful and I loves her.
Lots.
Lots and lots.
I'm all hers and she's mine, and that's the best.

@gameragodzilla
Skyrim is overrated as fuck, but at the very least, you can occasionally dip in and out of it like many do, if you're bored. It suffers from being mediocre most of all, but there's an element of 'make your own fun' to it. (Not to defend it much here, I don't think it's brilliant by any means)
I think the main difference to me is essentially, Witcher is bad, and doesn't give you enough freedom to try and make your own fun. Skyrim isn't very good, but is flexible enough that you can find pockets of fun that you yourself made.
This is purely a comparison tho, I wouldn't rate either highly. I just...think Skyrim's worst flaw is being a bit boring, whereas Witcher is outright -annoying- all the way through.
-
@gameragodzilla
Makes sense, as mentioned before, I'm more of a fantasy person, less of a sci-fi and cyberpunk person.
I -can- get into them, I just fit into fantasy more. Whereas you're clearly the opposite.
-
Tho the "Gaunter O'Dimm is the devil!" stuff is very on the nose.
Because as established, CD Projekt can't write complex characters to save their lives.
-
@gameragodzilla
Fair nuff. ...Obviously I disagree :P But that's sorta the point.
-
Hell, to be fair, I unironically think Hearts of Stone was actually a fairly good expansion, definitely flawed, but overall good. So I don't think I can be accused of hating CD Projekt just for the sake of it.
They have done one good thing, in my mind. Even if it's attached to a bad thing.
-
@gameragodzilla
What do you -like- about it tho? (I'm not looking to have a long argument or discussion, merely curious of whether it's more of a middle ground just cos you don't care, or if you actually do fit into a neutral opinion. ...If the difference is clear there)
-
@gameragodzilla
I just find Human Revolution to be really really overrated, is all.
-
Plus, with the current gaming community as it is. Even if it's shit it'll probably get a lot of leeway because they're treated as gamings saviours.
We've already seen the opposite many times in how Bioware is given overly unfair criticism, in the wrong areas to actually critique, because they're not liked much these days by certain vocal indiviuals.
-
If it turns out good, I'll play it, I'll enjoy it, and I'll say "good job CD Projekt on actually making something worthwhile for once."
It's just that...the Witcher games...Gwent...GoG...all of that has been awful, so why should I currently imagine things will be different?
-
The thing is, as much as I ridicule CD Projekt Red, I do -want- Cyberpunk 2077 to be good, and I hope it is.
I like proper RPGs. I'm very much open to more that are done well.
I just don't have reason to believe that it will be, from literally everything CD Projekt have ever done, so far.
